I've always fancied the idea of living in an old railway carriage. But the overall costs are probably prohibitive...

- Buy the carriage (probably not that much for an old Mk 1 or Mk 2)
- Find a suitable location to put it (expensive)
- Get planning permission (difficult)
- Get it to the site (expensive)
- Restore it (bottomless pit)

I remember a while ago there was a programme on one of the Discovery chanels about someone who did just this. Sadly can't remember which programe it was though.

years ago when they were selling W class trams by the heap load, they were selling for about $20,000 although now, I would imagine it would be about $50,000 but I guess it depends on who is selling and who is buying.

you could buy old Hitachi train carriages for a little more than $2500 although that was when you could buy them off the Government, privately they sell for anywhere between $10,000 and $20,000 but it depends on their condition etc.

The old Tait trains used to sell for next to nothing, not they are quite pricey to buy.

Some of the bus companies that have the old 'Mk1' buses which are early 1980's era can be bought for about $5000 when they were in service in the Met days they were green and yellow, now they are mostly all red and yellow.

Ok after all those people who say it can't be done I want to give you some posotives. I know a guy in Iowa who owns his own GP 7 and 3/4 miles of track. I have no idea how he got it but the track was an abandoned industrial spur. Haven't had a chance to ride it yet but been meaning to visit for some time.

Getting track as long as that might not be an option for everyone. If I owned enough land to run a tram on (I'd rather and old tram than a train) I'd have it run in a ideal circle so that the tram could run for long periods of time without going back and fourth.

My current location would easily allow that, but my parents would not, maybe after enough convincing but it would be a waste as there are rumors of us moving. So at the moment, no tram. :( lol

I've just had a look at that site out of the purest curiosity, and I'm not too sure about it to be perfectly honest. :| Aside from the site itself looking like a five minute bash-together in MS Frontpage, the site proclaims itself to be "regularly updated"...Yet most of the pages give a "last modified" date in April. :?

Also, this site strikes gives me the impression that C.A.R. Services is very much a one-man concern, and I'm wondering how on Earth a sole trader manages to acquire listing and sales rights to so much rolling stock (Including the whole of VXCs Mk. II fleet) without having to pull some dodgy (Or at least underhand) strings...

I must admit I'm curious about the 4TC that's listed as being for sale (Stock number either 417 or 617, BR Blue livery) and I'd like to know what kind of price he's asking for it...But before I pick up the 'phone, can someone verify that this business is a genuine one and do have clearance to discuss information and sales of the stock listed on their site? :?: :)

Farewell...And thanks in advance for any info! <D

Harry Needle Railway Company for shunters. I know some preserved lines have steam and diesels that can be available: I was offered a wreck of a steam industrial once but it had to be sold to a charity for legal reasons.

HNRC to be screwed and ripped-off you mean.
