Been reading an item talking about how one could run a Yarmouth- Barmouth service.

What other similar examples are there?

This sort of thing:

Southampton -Northampton
Portsmouth Arms- Portsmouth Harbour
East Ham -West Ham
Horley- Chorley

etc etc

(not sure if this is the correct thread to post this on, please move if appropriate)

I'd like to propose a new branch line from Hayes & Harlington, in order that a service can be run from Reading to Yeading.

Larbert to (Arrochar and) Tarbet
And if the friends of the far north lines have their way, Falkirk to Halkirk

Lostock to Lostock Gralam. Which you used to be able to do on the St Annes on Sea to Greenbank service.

Portsmouth (Harbour or Southsea, not sure where it started) to Portsmouth Arms was nearly possible on Summer Saturdays in the 50s - but the train in question wasn't booked to stop. :(

What's it called? It's called Cumbernauld
The two Adlingtons is an obvious one, as is Mottingham to Cottingham via Nottingham.

The various suffixed London Road stations past and present such as Glasgow, Carlisle, Manchester (present day Piccadilly), Leicester (present day Midland Railway station), Guildford, and Brighton, plus any others I may have missed. Obviously, Central and Citadel are substituted for Glasgow and Carlisle for the present day.

On the mighty Great Western Railway metals, the suffixed "General" stations past and present such as Reading, Oxford, Wrexham, Cardiff (renamed Central - it does not really fit with GWR naming conventions), and Bodmin. This would involve portion working as beyond Reading, the rest of the "General" stations are in different directions, and Bodmin would be substituted with the Parkway station today.

Since the opening of Oxford Parkway on the Marylebone route (which is on the former Oxford & Bletchley Railway, and became part of the London & North Western), perhaps now is the time to bring back the "General" suffix for the GWR station?

They should build a new Tube line to connect Kennington with Kensington, that would really confuse the visitors and tourists

I was reminded of that as many years ago I had to redirect a lost driver heading down Borough High Street, who had done exactly that!

If Rowley Regis ever got renamed Blackheath you could have Blackheath to Blackheath (Sandwell to South London journey)

How about Charing Cross (Glasgow) to Charing

Or Clapham to Clapham Junction

Then there's Dorridge to Norwich

New Lane from Old Street

And Ham (Street) to Sandwich

Charing Cross to Charing Cross is possible. Charing Cross (London) to Charing might have been a thing in the past.

Yes!

Stopping Pattern:
Whitchurch, Heath Low Level, Cardiff Queen Street, Cardiff Central, Newport, Hereford, Shrewsbury, Whitchurch, Nantwich, Crewe, Wolverhampton, Birmingham New Street, Leamington Spa, Banbury, Oxford, Reading, Basingstoke, Whitchurch.

The existence of 2 stations with similar names only gives rise to problems when there are through services between them (as will happen with the 2 Adlingtons when electrification of the line via Bolton is complete) or where there a direct trains to 2 stations with the same name from a 3rd station. The latter happened to me once at Cardiff Central when I wished to purchase a single to Whitchurch (Glam) but the booking clerk initially offered me a much more expensive ticket to Whitchurch (Salop).

Before I had a smartphone, I often found myself on the blower to National Rail Enquiries trying to explain to someone in India the difference between Moorfields and Mirfield

I had a similar thing. I wanted to travel to Hatfield, but was aware Hatfield Several also existed. So, I was very specific and asked for tickets to Hatfield, the one in Hertfordshire. I was given tickets to Hertford North.
