I booked advance tickets from Edinburgh to Kildonan and return. I did this before knowing exactly where my flat would be for the next academic year. Therefore, I find myself with advance tickets from Edinburgh Waverley to Kildonan (splitting at Inverness), but living close to Haymarket station.

My tickets specifically detail that I must take the 07:25 from Stirling to Inverness, and the 20:15 from Inverness to Stirling. They do not detail what specific service I have to get from Edinburgh to Stirling and back ("and required connecting services").

Could I start my journey from Haymarket, or do I have to board the service at Edinburgh Waverley? If so, what tickets are available from Haymarket to Waverley?

Strictly speaking no. However there is a local agreement that tickets to Edinburgh are interavilable at Haymarket and vice versa, so you will have no problems. If you're still unsure you can simply politely ask the Haymarket gateline staff if you will be OK to go get on there with your ticket from Edinburgh. They will almost certainly say yes!

It would be good if this agreement were formalised, because as far as I am aware it does apply universally. Does anyone know any cases where it hasn't applied?

I have never had any problems with using an Edinburgh to Linlithgow ticket from Haymarket in the last 40+ years!

If you feel you would prefer to stick strictly to your booked journey, it is considerably cheaper to use the bus than the train to get to Waverley.

Whilst I haven't done it, I know others that have so you're probably fine.
Is there any particular reason why Haymarket and Waverley aren't a Edinburgh Stations group?

The problem comes with the fact they are advance tickets, meaning that I have to travel from point A to B, I can't get on at any point between the two.

Indeed. However my reply above took account of this - the local agreement is that all tickets are interavilable. Even say a Dunbar to Edinburgh ticket would be accepted at Haymarket.

When going to a conference in Lancaster, 3 of out party joined at Haymarket with Edinburgh to Lancaster advances. They apparently didn't have any issues.

I do it all the time: Advances, Anytimes, Seasons, you name it. Never had a problem.
