Being born in 99... Id say,

During my lifetime - NX I thought was quite smart, both EC and EA. Any Dynamic lines livery, maybe with exception to the 350 as I see that as a bit over the top. VTEC, 91s and HSTs that is. Midland Mainline blue and grey was also quite smart to me. ECs flying Scotsman and BBMF special liveries were a class act.

Pre life >1999,

BR Blue, plain and simple. Looks class on the likes of Sparrowhawk and Alycidon. BR Green with small yellow ends looked really nice as well. Look at D213 'Andania' & D9002 'KOYLI'. The original AC Electric blue for the AL1 - 6. But when it comes to steam locos, Express blue like that on 60007.

At great risk of being controversial, I rather liked Northern Spirit Turquoise and Green. I thought it was bright and refreshing, and gave needed emphasis to the North with the bold italic N. As for the Transpennine version of Northern Spirit, I thought it was very impressive. I loved how it looked almost iridescent, in certain lighting conditions and at certain angles. Again, the emphasis on the North was good.

I also liked Northern's picture liveries, they were a nice way to publicize some of the scenic lines and tourist attractions served by the company.

I always find myself impressed by a rake of BR blue & grey coaches, especially with a large-logo locomotive, simple, effective and timeless!
Mentioned Northern Spirit a day or so ago. They definitely knew how to treat front ends to make them look sleek and modern both with the black window surround on the 142s and by extending the yellow upwards on the TPE 158s. When looking on Flickr for an image of the WYPTE version of NS-TPE (mostly to check I hadn't imagined it!) I was surprised to find it was probably only applied to 158909. I did get to see a wide variety of front-end paint on the 158s and I'd say either the aforementioned Northern Spirit approach, or the FGW/GWR version look(ed) the best. Northern's current 158 fleet is all over the place on that front, often looking like they have a lazy-eye, with the yellow rising higher on one side than the other.

Ah yes! The lazy-eyed 158s! The yellow immediately below the windscreen (where the unit number often goes) is a vinyl sticker, and doesn't react well to the screen-wash chemicals, so eventually wears off, with variable degrees of reapplying! So I'm led to believe anyway...

Sounds about right! While browsing Flickr images of 158s, I saw one hybrid 3-car (Central Trains IIRC) which had the unit number displayed in a mix of white and black text, of different sizes and fonts, and with uneven spacing... what a mess!
