With first generation diesel locomotive building virtually complete this month would see just one Class 50 locomotives delivered.
New Locomotives
Class 50 – D436
The next nine years or so will be dominated by a mix of locomotive modifications and the withdrawal of the more un-successful or “non standard” types. The main programme of modification this month was Doncaster Works undertaking replacement of the unreliable Mirrlees JVS12T 1250bhp engine in the Brush Type 2 fleet with a 1470bhp English Electric 12SVT engine.

With the end of main line steam on British Rail the last remaining seventy nine main line steam locomotives were withdrawn in the month. The slaughter of the small or non-standard diesel shunter fleet decreased from thirty eight to fourteen . The non standard or unreliable main line diesel fleet condemnations increased from four to six with three North British Class 21’s, two North British Class 22’s and one Warship Class 42 condemned. At least nine of the August withdrawals escaped being broken up, seven Stanier Black Five 4-6-0’s, one Stanier 8F 2-8-0 and of course BR Standard Brotannia Pacific 4-6-2 70013 Oliver Cromwell.
