Doncaster 102...West Wales Raiders 6

Still no hope whatsoever for West Wales Raiders in this league. They held Doncaster to 42-6 at half-time, but then conceded 60 unanswered points in the second half. The only consolation for them is they have now scored 100 points this season.

Their record this season to date....P15...W0 D0 L15... F 100 A 1240...Pts 0

Doesn't get any better for West Wales Raiders in today match against Hunslet.

Raiders 06 - Hunslet 86

I do wonder if other team should take West Wales Raiders places in Betfred League 1 next season given every team so far this season have pretty much given Raiders heavy beaten.

Two excellent ladies cup games at Warrington today.

The Bulls, a ladies Superleague team beating Stanningley, an amateur side, by not a lot. Great effort by both sides.

Challenge Cup Cas v Rhinos. Despite Rhinos doing all their best to gift it to Cas and Cas playing every trick to stop Leeds scoring, Rhinos came out winners.

West Wales Raiders 0 ... York Knights 130

This bottom side home to the top side match was absolutely ruthless in the exposure of the difference in quality of these two sides. Half time came with York leading 68-0 and matters continued abated in the second half with York scoring 22 tries.

West Wales Raiders record now reads:-
P21 ... W0 D0 L21 .... Points for 146 .. Points against 1698 ... Points 0

West Wales Raiders 18 Coventry Bears 28 (HT 12-12)

This is much better - there is hope for the Raiders yet. Apparently in previous games they were hit not only by injuries but also by having three players taken away to play for Wales U19s. And the attendance of 409 does them credit.

In view of the declining attendances and diminished atmosphere in recent years, is it time to move the Challenge Cup final from Wembley to Old Trafford?

How did the change to a summer game fair for Rugby League? It's decades upon decades since I used to attend Headingley on grey, wintery Saturdays and loved it. The game just finishing in the dying dusk and a lovely warm Original Oak in which to partake of some (at the time) dodgy Tetley's. Several of the Leeds team always made in over and joined in the general craic. Can't think that a summer's day would have the same feel. The Rugby League Cup final just had to be a full Wembley in spring. Shame to think of it being at Old Trafford in the back-end of the year. Well, I suppose that's just this grumpy old dinosaur for you.

I wonder where the Raiders will play next season, if they play at all?

Wasn't there talk of Gloucestershire and Oxford merging and forming a new club based in Bristol starting next season?

The "Million Pound Game" this coming Sunday night between 4th (Toronto Wolfpack) and 5th (London Broncos) in the Qualifiers should certainly add some "spice" to the match, noting what is at stake for the winners.

In what was a very strong defensive game with no side able to score a try, London Broncos avenged both their league defeats by Toronto Wolfpack by winning their place in next season's top flight 4-2.

Salford Red Devils 24 ... London Broncos 0

This was going to be a difficult match for London on their return to the Super League and they did well to keep the scoreline down to 6-0 at half-time with good defensive cover, but the second half saw Salford in more determined and dominant form and they increased their try count to four in the match.

Hull Kingston Rovers 22 ... Salford Red Devils 24

In this top-five meeting at Craven Park, Hull KR were dominant in the first half and deservedly led 22-8 at half time, but Salford came out with a far better defensive and attacking second-half strategy and scored 16 unanswered points in the second-half to win, winning the try count five to four. Salford move over Hull KR to fourth place in the league as a result of this win.

Catalans Dragons 0 ... Salford Red Devils 46

This away match looked to be something of a stern test for Salford as Catalans Dragons had won on their home ground last week against Warrington Wolves but the first half showed good Salford resolve and they led 18-0 at half time, but this time there was no Dragons second half improvement that they showed against Warrington Wolves but an even more determined game play by Salford who added a further 28 unanswered points and finished with eight tries, keeping them in the top four in the league table.

Another planet...
I've just learned of the passing of former St Helens and Wales RL player Mick Murphy at the age of 77. After his playing career ended, he went into coaching and then administration. Murphy was largely responsible for saving Huddersfield from liquidation in the late 1980s and then worked for Huddersfield RU, as well as having a minor role in the TV series "Merseybeat" (2002).

He also introduced me to the sport in his later work as a P.E teacher.

RIP, Mr Murphy.

Warrington Wolves 12 ... Salford Red Devils 36

In this shock result, Salford scored two very early tries and kept pressing in the first half and led 28-6 at half time. They held off the expected Warrington second half comeback well and ended worthy winners, winning the try count 5 to 2. Krisnan Inu was successful with eight kicks at goal.

North Wales Crusaders 70 ... West Wales Raiders 8

In this bottom-three Welsh clash, the Raiders were, as last season, totally outclassed and Crusaders led 42-4 at half time. Rob Massam led the Crusaders try-fest with four tries of the twelve scored by Crusaders.

Raiders have now lost all seven league games played, scoring 68 points and conceding 326 points in reply.

London Broncos 10 ... Salford Red Devils 30

Bottom on the league Broncos could not come to terms with Salford in the first half and Salford led 24-0 at half-time. The Broncos made a much better second half showing, but Salford always managed matters well and won the try count five to two.

Salford Red Devils 28 ... Leeds Rhinos 16

Salford are showing much better game-coordination this season and played with more adaptability and deservedly led 12-6 at half time against a team that they do not normally fare well against. They consolidated matters in the second half and won the try count five to three. Salford now are in sixth place in the league.

St Helens 32 ... Salford Red Devils 30

The Friday match produced a game of fluctuations of fortunes and after 12 minutes, St Helens led 12-0, but Salford fought back well and led 18-16 at half time. The second half saw Salford extend their lead to 30-16 but then St Helens scored two further unanswered tries but Salford still led in the dying moments when St Helens made a final attack and it appeared that their player had not crossed the line with the ball being grounded correctly, which led to a review, which allowed the try which was then converted to give St Helens a victory that had not seemed possible.

Hull FC 35 ... Salford Red Devils 32

This Friday match showed how well Hull FC are having a good season and the home crowd were well behind them in the first half when Salford could not come to terms with the Hull attack and Hull deservedly led 28-12 at half time. The match talk in the Salford dressing room seemed to have an immediate effect, as Salford were far more dominant in the second half, but could not finally overcome the points deficit. Six tries to each side showed attacking rugby at its best.

Hull now are 4th and Salford are now 7th in the league.
