Hi

Has anyone been to Cite du Train recently?

Its two hours from Montbart (My nearest station) and the train times work for a day return. I have some friends staying that can look after the dog. Plus SNCF had some reasonable fares booking today for travel later in the week.

So I'm going. :D

Is there anything that I should look out for?
Is it easy enough to get to from Mulhouse station?
Is there a decent shop?

How does it compare to York?

Thanks

Alex

You can get there easily enough from Mulhouse-Ville on the Tram-Train. It's quite interesting, but not really on the same scale as the NRM. The first two halls have been renovated, but the rest is pretty much as it was in the 60s and 70s when the museum was created. You should go, they need the business!

S Yorks, usually
I went in June, and I liked it. Spent 3-4 hours there.
Lots of locos and stock on display (almost as much as the NRM I'd say), friendly staff, free ride on a "draisine", nice pancakes in cafe, easy walk from tram-train stop.

Go, go, go :). I have been there two weeks ago.

Tramline 3 or the Tram-Train will get you there from the station in about 15min. The stop "Musées" is a 5min walk from the museum. A tram day pass (named 24h ticket) is 4,30€.

For other fares, schedules and maps checkout http://www.solea.info

Other things to do:
  • Take T2 to end stop "Nouveau Bassin" for a little stroll along the basin
  • The "Canal du Rhone au Rhin" passes by the station. Its a nice walk along the canal
  • If you want visit another museum: The "Cité de l'automobile" has a remarkable collection of automobiles. Tram stop "Musée de l’Auto" on line T1.
  • If you just want to watch the trams: Next to stop "Daguerre" there is a passenger overpass with overs a nice view.
  • If you prefer trams with green, between "Musée de l'Auto" and "Doller" there is a lot of green along the tram line (might be bit brown now considering the weather :))
Enjoy your trip

Cheers
Charly

We went on Wednesday.
  • French school holidays - but very few people there
  • There is a museum next door that about electricity. You can buy a joint ticket for Cite du Train and it. But we didn't.
  • Its a bit out of town but Mulhouse is not that large so only 15 mins or so by tram
  • Two main rooms and an outdoor area. There are also a number of smaller rooms (First room was a bit dark.)
  • Lots to see.
  • Shop was a bit unexciting. €100 for a 15cm reproduction metal train sign. Pens, t-shirts etc
  • Easy walk from the tram stop
  • Friendly staff
  • If you don't speak french the first room has no information in English. There is a bar code thing that you can scan and its mean to give info in English. However it wasn't working. The rest of the museum has signs in english
  • There is a TEE exhibition and they have one carriage inside the museum but there is another TEE (Trans Europ Nuit) outside. Would of liked to of seen it inside next to the other carriage.
  • They also have some Paris suburban stock sitting outside. I know these are not exciting but they are what lots of use most frequently travelled on. Would of like to of seen them inside and open to the public.
