Half and half* - but never by contactless, and yes my debit card does live in a Faraday case.

*Shouldn't this be an option on the poll?
Totally agree. I have selected 'cash' because I make more cash transactions but, for large transactions, I pay by card (reasons as in #30) so the value of my card transactions might well be larger (for the places listed in the title of the thread).

Whatever I feel at the time. Since contactless came in, I'll use it for small purchases that I'd never bother using chip and pin for. I don't use Android pay as I trust Google as far as I can throw them (watch me get banner ads for Android pay now!). I don't use contactless on TfL though, as my Oyster is easier to access than getting my wallet out at a crowded gateline. Not that I'm in London much anyway.

I used contactless in London last month and was a bit awkward getting my debit card out on a crowded gateline.

Pubs - almost always cash, don't want my bank transaction history clogged up with beer purchases (secondary concerns about electronic profiling)
Supermarkets or reputable chain grocers - always card
Corner shops - always cash, due to security/trust concerns
Restaurants - usually card but will sometimes do cash if I get a feeling they might be a bit dodgy
Train tickets - always card, makes business expenses admin easier
Cafes or coffee shops - usually card but with same proviso as for restaurants
Takeaways - almost always cash unless a large chain establishment

I never use Samsung/Google Pay or equivalent as it doesn't offer me any more benefit than contactless.

Yeah , leap of trust in corner shops with chip and pin machines , who knows they might be collected card details ? Same in restaurants with chip and pin machines . I use only bank cash machines and if possible inside a bank . Dont use ones that are attached to a corner shop or look like they dont get used often

Do you take card at your business? How do you feel about it?

No, I don't take cards - cash (or cheque) only. Anything to annoy the banks :D

(It's an antique business and customers usually expect to pay cash - but there's a cashpoint nearby for those who didn't. I may lose half a dozen sales a year from people who wanted to use a credit card, but it has very little impact on my trade and the money saved (from transaction fees) more than compensates)

I do also accept payment by direct bank transfer and paypal. I think the former may take over from cards in a few years.

Always use cash still. Quite often catches people out in certain shops and restaurants when they hand you the card machine straight away before realising you want to use cash.

Was surprised to see Bradford (Park Avenue) have card paying facilities at their turnstiles.

I like it!

Also goes some way to eliminating the argument "we've seen branch use drop off by ??% in the last ?? years so we have no choice but to close the branch in wherever."

I still take cash out of the bank the old fashioned way... cheque payable to "self" at the counter...

You think direct bank transfer will take over cards? But cards are just a direct bank transfer via an convenient agent to identify each bank account. Do you think there will be a phone app that automates BACS?

The thing about a direct transfer is that nobody is skimming off a percentage.
Phone to phone transfers have been available for a few years but haven't taken off. I haven't been interested enough to check if there is a fee.

Direct bank transfers are not convenient enough unless someone simplifies the process (e.g. the current card issuers).

If someone simplifies the process then they will need to make money by doing so, so there must be some sort of fee somewhere. Alternatively, your data on your transactions is sold somehow (much worse).

I don't personally see this happening any time soon.

Put contactless in the voting bit , but I use Google or Samsung Pay for all my transactions now , instead of physical card.

Mostly Glasgow-ish. Mostly.
Mostly Google Pay or card contactless..pays to keep a debit card in my wallet for those really occasional cash-only situations. Not that I can remember the last time that happened.

Cards almost 100% of the time. Not a pub person so cash irrelevant, same goes for restaurants/takeaways etc, etc. I can draw out £30 & find it lasts a long, long time.

In the aftermath of Storm Desmond, our town had no power for 2-3 days. Everything was cash as there was simply no way of using cards, not even cash dispensers were working. For those without cash available, they were basically unable to buy anything, nor even get a bus/taxi/train. Lots of people stranded and relying on charity/local people to help them out. After seeing that, I make sure I have enough cash on me and some more at home, for when we have the next power outage.

I normally use Oyster PAYG on the tube as the card lives in an outside pocket where I can reach at the gateline but which would be easy to pick. Maximum loss about £10. Bank and credit cards live in a closed inside pocket.

I realised that contactless had taken over when I used a new (paid) public loo in Whitby in August and found contactless readers at the turnstile for th 40p charge.

I keep a very minimal amount of cash on me, usually no more than £20. I like to use cash whenever possible but if I don't have cash or can't be bothered to check I'll use contactless.

Think I now only pay the milkman and barman in cash! Even the local bus now takes contactless, and looking in my purse I only have a few coppers - so if I go out for a beer tonight I will hit an ATM first.

If it's for drinks then I pay with cash, but if it's for food as well then I pay with my card.

I didn't know you could still do that!

Should your bank branch ever close, I would love to hear how the 'Tecxperts' or 'Digital Wizards' explain to you how you can continue banking with them using your preferred methods. More power to your elbow. Nothing annoys me more than the statements like we are all banking/ shopping electronically now. More yes, all no.

That happened to me. Fortunately the bank picked it up (card had been cloned somehow...still don't know how) and used miles away, twice and must have been flagged. However that's not the story...

The bank rang me wiht an automated call "we think you have been a victim of fraud...etc" and - I ignored it as I thought it was one of those spam fraud phone calls. Hours later it rang again, same message, ignored it again  so the card could well, by then, have been travelling the globe!

However I check my balance on-line nearly every day, and after that second call decided to check anyway, and nothing untoward showed up. However - something I had not done before - I clicked on "recent transactions that haven't been deducted" and, hey ho, there were two which weren't mine + a £2 charge from Tesco for card checking (what't that?? anyway it wasn't my check) so immediately rang the bank, got through after 45 mins wait <(, apologised profusely for ignoring their calls (they understood), got the two purchaes cancelled and refunded, the card cancelled and a new one arrived two days later.

Point being the system worked, but surely there's a better way for a "real" bank to contact the customer to ask if recent purcheses are genuine??

Meanwhile, I learn that the bank will flag up suspicion if you type your password or pin number too slowly/quickly (never mind keep getting it wrong) than normal which I find reassuring. I think?

R/e "real" banks, when dad passed away and I executed his affairs/probate, I was so glad to have a branch open just a mile away. Frome there I could hand over documents, signatures and even my ID in their office, and wait while they organised stuff in the background. Wouldn't know what would happen without - Maybe a 13-mile ride into Manchester? Or everything through the post, which means sending wills, probate docs, statements, passports/ID and all the rest of it which would be worrysome, never mind time-consuming?

Trouble is that branches don't actually provide the services any more, they are just there to sell things. All they did when my mother passed away was forward all the paperwork to a head office department who took a month to sort things out. A process which would have taken 48 hours in the branch back in the 70s when I worked for NatWest.

i try to run off without paying or get my dining partner to pay!

I use my card for food and cash for drinks unless they are on a combined bill. I tend to use contact less quite a lot now
