Speculative ideas... it only appears for me when logged in.

This is good, because it means that only people who have registered, and are thus have been vetted by the mods as completely rational, can contribute.

I'm unsure those two go together!

Is this intentional, because it's rather annoying if you use multiple computers?
Yes, access to this forum is only for those with five or more posts.

I wonder if there should be some thought given to whether it is necessary to have separate sections for "Buses & Coaches" and "Other Public Transport"? Some forums based in other countries combine all local public transport in one section. Obviously British culture has dictated that buses are very distinct from trams and this demarcation is reflected in having separate sections, but it could be seen to be further entrenching the lack of integration in British urban transport.

Except of course that many of the tram systems in this country are based on the use of former heavy-rail alignments so they tend to be perceived somewhat differently than trams on the Continent are by their local residents. It's a pity but that's the reality.

They were previously combined but the volume of discussion around buses was drowning out any other discussion. Currently the bottom thread on the front page of Buses & Coaches had a post made yesterday at 1855 whilst Other Public Transports equivalent was posted in at the end of August!

So by splitting them we help to give those who wish to discuss buses an area that is clearly marked and available for them to do so without clogging up other aspects of public transport with topics that people may not be interested in.

If we didn't split them then right now there would only be three posts in the new combined sections front page that weren't related to buses!

It isn't some 'British culture' issue and is instead something we spent time considering with the aim of improving the user experience.

Why does the Speculative Ideas forum only appear when logged in? When not logged in I can see the other four fora under 'Other Rail & Transport', but not that one.

Think there's a previous thread

It is intentional, and IMO a good thing too, given some of the posts there (oops - that might include mine...).

Mods, that was a quick move :)

Thankyou, yes, I recall it now. Since, I have merely thought it a little odd that a major project like HS2 seemed to be compressing itself into one thread, and never expected to be involved in a speculative thread so forgot all about it. I am now a little surprised that a major question like what happens to XC after HS2 has found its way into a forum apparently intended to conceal the slightly deranged from public view, but I suppose anything about the future is speculative, even, as we keep finding out, projects supposedly planned in sufficient detail for execution to be in progress.

There aren't any changes to the Forum Structure planned currently. That postion can always change as the Forum develops but we will of course provide an update as and when.

I love the idea of a "forum replacement bus service"! But actually there is an alternative still chugging along - the uk.railway newsgroup on Usenet.

A toast (tea for me, I’m afraid, at this time of day) to the Moderators here for the work they do, much of it unseen I am sure. Having woken up in the wee small hours the other day I sneaked a look at the New posts and there were dozens if not hundreds of spam posts. By morning they had been removed. I am sure there is much that (thankfully) the rest of us never have to look at.

Indeed. There is always a lot going on under the surface that most of us never have to see. The hard work and dedication of a few makes things straight-forward for the rest of us.

(Remember you can report spam posts: it's a helpful signpost to the moderators when they wake up!)

I used the "Contact Us" facility at some unearthly very early morning hour when I logged on, to see a whole plethora of Cyrillic script new threads....far too many to use the "report button" on each individual thread.

Thanks for contacting us but please use the report button as the contact us e-mail is not checked as regularly.

If there's a substantial infestation then just report one and let us know that there's loads of it. We have ways of tracking it all down ;)

An alternative approach I've used (this morning, for example) when one new user has gone on a spamming spree, is to open the user's profile instead, and then report the user.

Moderators: is that method useful, a hinderance, or no difference to reporting individual posts?

^^ wot @krus_aragon said ^^

This is a huge/ busy website with lots of people passionately arguing about things yet has very little drama, very little seems to go wrong (in the eyes of this humble user, who doesn't see all of the behind the scenes stuff that may not be fit for public consumption!)

There are a few people put on "moderation", but thankfully very few bans (of posters that I've recognised anyhow), plus the Mods seem to want to use any surplus funds for donating to preservation groups (rather than funding a lavish lifestyle of jaunts on the Orient Express!)

It doesn't get said often enough, but the way things work on here is a credit to the people who put the hours in keeping everything sweet (and, in my experience, "moderating" is often like sausages, in that it's nicer to appreciate the end result rather than seeing every step of the process up close!)

Very well put tbtc. I’m putting a virtual ‘thumbs up’ emoji next to your post for that one.
