I did get an interview for the original position, that’s when they told me that someone was already lined up for it.
Where did you see the new position advertised? Where was it for?

Was this up in the north west? I had one withdrawn on the same day at roughly the same time, but I had been sat at under con for 2 months.

I emailed them and tbey couldn't tell me anything as to why.

A little irksome!

It’s was for Durham grade 2 on indeed and the Network rail website, that was couple hours before the site went down for maintenance, so assuming it will be back on when maintenance completed on the 26th.
Do you think it could be one of the positions they mentioned?

Ah ok, I’m pretty sure that the places that they were on about were for sites nearby to the original post

Hi all, recently applied for one of the York ROC positions - Grade 9 and was wondering if anyone else had progreesed further than the testing stage as of yet? I completed my tests a few weeks ago and was informed I'd met the standard and advised to await further notifications.

Sadly I haven't heard anything further. It's the first time I've applied to NR but I do work in the rail industry in a front line operations role.

Any advice or guidance would be hugely appreciated. Thanks.

Yeah it was for midge hall if I remember correctly. Ive come to the conclusion its probably just a mistake since its changed back to under consideration for assessment 2 and it was because they was updating the career website at the time. Would be nice if I was still in with a shout though!

Yup that's the one.

I thought it was odd the application was withdrawn in the first place. If it was filled we'd have been told, as I had for one at the ROC .

Then again it was odd it was for two positions in the first place. Id have thought on that line, single track infrequent trains it wouldnt have had more than two full timers plus a relief so to have two positions didn't sit right with me.

Those jobs would have had a lot of applications, Network Rail HR, specifically signalling roles, are especially slow. Just be patient and if you are going to be successful you will know.

Thanks John for the info. I figured there would be many applications, both internally and externally so yes, if I get the nod then great but if not then I know the test results are valid for a while anyway should anything else suitable come up.

233 applications for this job I’m told. Don’t believe they will all be grade 9 jobs offered either, its for the new Kings Cross sub ROC which will have panels of various grades.

If it’s for Kings Cross PSB migration to York ROC the grades will as follows. If the link is staying complete ie all five panels just become five workstations then it will be at the highest grade ie grade 9, but if they split the link in two , then you could have one grade 9 link (3 workstations) and one grade 7 link (2 workstations). Anyway the new workstations grading are below.

Thanks both, I won't hold my breath then. Shame I would have loved to have been in with a shout at one of those jobs.

Just keep plugging away. I wouldn’t have thought I’d get a grade 7 role having had no experience. There were 8 candidates interviewing for 1 role with a few being internals that I noted signing in before I did. Just be as prepared as you can. Just because there are internals do not let that put you off either as most will not be as prepared as you are. Most of the internals I came up against when I went for a previous grade 3 role had nothing on me and I was actually a little more confident about getting the role after seeing some of them at my assessment centre.

Oh and I got reserved candidate for the grade 3 I went for and missed out to an actual grade 2 signaller who didn’t attend the assessment centre for obvious reasons lol

Pretty cocky for someone with 100 applications.

Except the knowledge of the railway, experience with signalling and all the terminologies?

Let’s leave the sarcy comments for Facebook and other chat rooms mate. The intention was to boost his confidence as I myself felt like him during the application process. Plugging away thinking I was never gonna get it because you were competing against internals as well as other like minded individuals trying to get on the railway. Can’t speak for everyone but that was my experience and it paid off. 60 applications to be exact lol. For various roles not just signaller. Most people say apply for everything so I did. 5 interviews in total. 3 failed attempts with 2 job offers finally getting the grade 7. Starting soon and cannot wait!!!

The internals I went up against did not have signalling experience at the assessment centre as they were from other areas or just worked on the railway. Not sure about for the grade 7 position though. When I went to my interview I had a lot of knowledge through talking to the helpful people on here as well as visiting and observing in every signal box I had interviewed for in the past. Plus visiting the box Prior to my interview. I read parts of the signalling rule book and tried to understand the terminology as best as I could so that I knew for example the difference between an nx panel, West cad etc as well as the other basic terminology that I felt I should be expected to know if I was serious about getting the job.

Hi all

I have recently applied and passed the initial tests for the York ROC positions, obviously not expecting to hear anything soon but have a question regarding the assessment 2.

Am I correct in presuming if invited to assessment 2 we will sit similar tests to the online ones?

Whats odd though is that yours was never at the under consideration for the interview before it was withdrawn, whereas mine was from an early stage and now we're both at that stage.

Who knows, tempted to email them but never any point!

Got my email couple hours ago to say under consideration with hiring manager and now when I have just checked again it’s gone back to test completed! So god knows what’s happening, I also had another application today gone to application withdrawn whilst sat at under consideration

I received an email the other day regarding the position I applied for....the actual advertised post has gone to someone on a secondment, but they’re possibly creating a couple of other posts in the next couple of weeks. Fingers crossed they do! I’m hoping that they wouldn’t go to the effort of doing assessments and interviews if they weren’t going to need people!
We're was the position for ?

Any chance of a link to the signalling rule book please?

The Rule Book can be found on the RSSB website:

https://www.rssb.co.uk/standards-an...ds-explained/national-operations-publications

I would advise you NOT to read the rule book if you are a new entrant into the railway and wish to join the grade, contrary to the advice given above. The whole point of signalling school is to teach you the nuts and bolts in applying the written word to the situation before you. There are many aspects of signalling which do not appear in the rulebook but appear in SBI's for example.

As has been mentioned above a general interest in the railway will serve you in good stead and a knowledge of what NR does will assist. But don't start confusing yourself on the terminology as out of context you could lose sight on what is required at the first stage (i.e psychometric testing and the interview).

Again and to reiterate what has already been written on here. The NR HR/application process is excruciatingly slow on occasions and even internal applicants find the process exasperating. If you have been successful they will let you know. But it does take time.

What he said ^^

There’s too many people on here giving poor advice of trying to get in, which frankly ruins this whole thread as your diamonds soon become hidden in the rough.

Don’t look at any rule book until you’re handed the module at signalling school, even then don’t read ahead. Chances are you’d either enterpret it wrong, or miss out parts that go with it as rules are spread all over the place. That being said, rules are changing all the time which is another reason to not read ahead.
