Just wondering what sort of journey anybody has done and does anybody do grand journeys like Man on a seat or do you prefer flying?

I just started doing Europe by rail and plan on Italy and Switzerland next.

I usually stay in Brussels or Paris for my journeys elsewhere.

Did a couple of interrail trips to Turkey 20 odd years ago, a fair bit of business travel by train to Germany, Austria, Italy, France although a lot less recently, just the odd trip to France and Belgium. I prefer the train but flying can be quicker, although often not by much

When much younger both Italy and Austria by ferry and train. Later travelled extensively by train in Holland, Belgium and France. More recently since retirement extensive travel in Germany (using Eurostar each time).

Living in Germany, I have crossed the borders to all of our neighbouring countries by train (or tram-train in the case of France) and also went to Hungary, Italy and the UK solely by train. Additionally I went to Slovakia from Vienna, but by coach and not train.

In the past 12 months I have done (all return journeys)

Copenhagen Airport to Halmstad (Sweden)
Amsterdam Airport to Amsterdam Centraal
Amsterdam Centraal to Utrecht
Copenhagen Airport to Malmo (Sweden) First time I have had the Swedish Border Police check my identity after crossing the Oresund Bridge
Friedrichshaven (Germany) to Feldkirch (Austria)
Feldkirch to Bregenz (Austria)

In a few weeks time I plan to travel from Dublin to Galway by rail but only because I could not find convenient flights to the west of Ireland and car hire

Also in that time I have ridden on trams in Basel, Amsterdam, Riga (Latvia)

In spite of that list in 12 months I do not consider myself to be a massive European rail traveller

Have now been to all countries of EURope, (Byelorus being the last this spring-due to its lifting visa-rules) and of all those (with railways) only Turkey and Russia (was still CCCP then) not all the way over the rails. Andorra and San Marino by bus from nearest railpoint. Albania in/out by bus, as its railways are not connected (for passengers) into further EUR.
Malta, Cyprus and Iceland by air. FarOer not-but I do not count them as independent country.

From the UK - I have travelled through to Siciliy and through to Bratislava

Longest international trip was Kiev - Odessa - Tiraspol .... Chisinau - Bucharest but had to fly at each end due to time constrictions.

Yerevan - Tbilisi - Batumi probably a close second.

Almost every european country.
I still miss a few, though : Albania, Finland, Ireland, Ukraine, Moldavia, Slovakia, the Baltics.
Most iconic trips :
Brussels Munich Vienna Budapest Bucharest Istanbul Tehran Mashhad Kerman
Brussels Paris Hendaye Lisbon
Charleroi Jeumont Paris Lyon Montpellier Barcelona Malaga Algesiras Tanger
Brussels Munich Beograd Athens
Brussels Hamburg Copenhagen Oslo
Brussels Berlin Warsaw Brest Moscow Sverdlovsk Irkutsk Ulab Bator Beijing
Brussels Zurich Budapest Craiova Sofia Thessaloniki Athens
Brussels Zurich Milan Rome Naples Palermo
Brussels Paris Moscow Tashkent

My main attraction is railways border points. The one I désire the most today is between Greece and Turkey (I've given up Syria).

Next trip I'd like to do is around the black sea, once Baku Tbilissi Kars will be operational...

Interrail when younger to most west European countries

London to Berlin when the Paris - Berlin Sleeper was running
London to Amsterdam - just before through services started
London to Brussels/Paris

Trip to Amsterdam was cheaper than flying and just as quick, while to Berlin by saving a night in a hotel was also cheaper than flying. Try to go by train to be more environmentally friendly than flying eg going London to Scotland I try to go by train although flights from London City can be more convenient

To Ireland by rail and ship quite a few years ago eg Manchester to Swansea via Larne and Rosslaire

Yes I’m planning Frankfurt and Zurich and Milan by train next year. Lots more cities in Germany to visit. Would like to go back to Berlin by train but that’s a bit further for a rail trip.

Lots of obscure places! Most recently to and from Slovakia and Czech Republic almost entirely by rail. We flew out Leeds-Prague for time reasons though.

Just after the Channel Tunnel opened: Brighton->London->Paris Nord->Paris Est->Mulhouse via Vesoul/Belfort and via a change in Strasbourg on the way back. A year later Canterbury->Ashford->Paris->Lausanne via Dijon->Milano via Brig, then Milano via Torino->Paris for the return.

Paris & CDG->Cannes/Nice/Marseille
Nice area, including Monaco and the Narrow Gauge line in Nice
Nice->Breil sur Roya->Ventimigilia->Nice --- very scenic
Marseille->Istres->Miramas via the coastal route
Lyon->Toulouse return in a day...ended up missing a connection in Montpellier, got put on a Spanish sleeper train which stopped in Lyon.
Paris->Lannion via Rennes
Calais->Amiens ('99 for the solar eclipse)
Frankfurt->Freiburg (+ visits to Breisach and a walk over the Rhine into France)
Munich, Berlin, Frankfurt local areas
Milan->Como (both routes)
Zurich->Neuchatel
Brussels->Paris/Lille
Amsterdam->Eindhoven
Oslo Airport->Oslo->Arendal
Stockholm->Sala/Västerås
Helsinki->Turku/Tampere/Kuopio/Jyväskylä/Rovaniemi and both routes to/from the latter via the main line and via Kuopio (when the sleeper train via that route was running)
Helsinki->St.Petersburg
Lisbon->Oporto/Coimbra/Nine (lines to Braga and Guimares were closed at the time, early 2000s)
Dublin->Galway
Rosslare->Limerick & Limerick Jct. (now closed)
Athens->Patrai (now closed)

Back in the 60s I did London to Zermatt and return and then London to Aachen.
In the modern era I’ve done Eurostar to Lille, Paris and Brussels. This year I did London to Köln and return. Been around much of Holland by train and. A number of internal journeys in German both East and West. Finally several long distance journeys in China.

In Europe I've been to every EEA country + Switzerland except for Italy and Liechtenstein.

Apart from the Eurostar destinations (Amsterdam is booked for October) I travel by air because I don't have enough time to go there and come back by train. Many of my trips are day trips or one nighters.

However I've taken a train in every country, whether local, commuter or long-distance, except the 3 Baltics (intercity buses more convenient), HU/BG/RO (didn't have time to go outside the capital city) and Iceland (obv.) although I did visit most of the central rail station(s).

Furthest was Southampton to Vienna over two days (leaving here around midday - think it was the 1457 off St Pancras - and overnighting in Cologne with an onward departure from there around 1200 and arriving shortly after dark in mid-July; think it was the 1416 off Frankfurt).

Furthest in one day was Salzburg to Southampton, leaving at just before 0800 and arriving in London still in daylight, helped by the clock change being the 'right' way for a long day and it being July. I think this was the time when I had a three-hour layover in Brussels so if I'd have had a shorter connection I could have done the _whole_ journey in daylight.

Furthest in one day the other direction was either London to Munich, leaving in daylight (the 06:50 or something to Brussels) and arriving Munich well before dark, ISTR 1700 or so; or Southampton to Nice.

In terms of places I've directly travelled to by train from the UK, it would be France, Germany, the Netherlands, Austria and Switzerland. I've also used railways in Greece, Italy and Spain but flew there.

London to Athens via the Balkans would be something I'd like to do at some stage.

If you do Buchs (CH) to Feldkirch (AT) you’ll clear the Liechtenstein railway “network”!

Has anyone done an entire rail journey within Liechtenstein? I have. A few years ago, when there was still a lunchtime local service between Feldkirch and Buchs, I travelled from where I was in Austria to Schaan Vaduz. On the return journey, the train broke down at Nendeln and we had to get off and catch a 'bus.

The only long journey I've done is Huddersfield to Prague, last October. Route was (bus into Huddersfield) then Leeds, Kings Cross to St Pancras walk, Brussels-Midi (overnight stop), then Frankfurt-aM, Nürnburg, Cheb(CZ), Prague. The return was done in a single day (sort-of), with a 5am departure from Prague and a 2:30am arrival in Leeds. The final leg was a cab to Batley, getting back at just after 3am meaning that (with the time difference) I'd been awake for over 24hrs. It was fun, but not for the faint-hearted!

If I can get myself organised in time, I'm planning to go to Barcelona (via the overnight train to Latour-Carol) next month.

Including journeys while visiting another country, rather than just journeys to another country, i can also include (in the order they were done):
Austria: travel from Kirchdorf-an-der-Krems to the ski resorts of Windischgarsten and Spital-am-Phryn.
France: "Le petit train jaune" from Villefranche-en-Conflent to Latour-Carol (in that direction only).
Germany: several trips from Unna to Dortmund Hbf, and from Holzwickede to Unna during successive College exchanges.
Czechia: a single trip from Praha-Podbaba to Praha-Masarykov in order to sample the double-deck "CityElefant" EMUs.

Did a couple of Interrails in the early 80s. More unusual journeys I recall were going to Istanbul via Belgrade.Waiting for the train there an empty coach came slowly rolling in, it must have been fly shunted from somewhere.It was full by the time it stopped, all doors and windows were used as points of entry. The Greek Turkish border crossing was an eye opener.
Went from Helsinki to Narvik via Oulu and Kemi, I read recently you can't cross the border by train anymore,I seem to remember a rattly little railcar. This trip involved those wonderful shunting moves onto the ships between Puttgarten and Rodby Farge and Helsingor and Helsingborg.
Another one that isn't the same is to West Berlin with the DDR stamp in the passport.
Got me reminiscing now. Trips further afield with many an hour or day in some cases on The Indian Railways.
