That was indeed a Doctor Who episode, "Planet of the Dead", featuring an excellent guest turn by Michelle Ryan.

Famously, the bus (which Wiki says was a 1980 Bristol VR) was badly damaged en-route to filming in Dubai when a shipping container was smashed into it at port.

Thanks, my memory had evidently blurred a few of the details, I thought it had been a half-cab for some reason :'(

and that episode proved that the Doctor is a bus spotter.... he pinched the gear selector unit from the bus... it's seen in later episodes as part of the tardis' controls

Known bizarrely as the Tardis's "Zig Zag Plotter" aka the gear selector from a Bristol VR! I believe it was one of the items recovered from one of the crushed ex Headingham Bristol VRs after the Dubai docks incident.

Anyone remember the episode of Boon where someone is chased off the end of the platform at Nottingham Station, under the Carrington Street Bridge and comes out at Ratcliffe power station about 10 miles away? Now *that* would have made more sense if it was Dr. Who!

Outside shots were of early Mk2 stock with opening windows
Inside shots were of late Mk2 a/c stock with the seats from the original Mk3 fleet, so presumably Mk2e?

I think Poldark's horse is some sort of Tardis. One minute they are cantering along the sea clifftops near my house, Cornwall, the next, they arrive at Horton Manor - Gloucestershire...... !
I do like to see the old interiors, much better than what we have.now.

It was a really good episode, btw, for anyone that hasn't seen it
I stayed away from this thread until I'd watched it with SWMBO: we both enjoyed it (she was put off by the Capaldi series).

One oddity that stuck in my mind was Grace shouting at the detraining passengers that the "tracks might still be live" or similar. Not a lot of third rail up in Sheffield, is there? The general advice is sound, though.

(I know why she had that line: to discourage kids and adults from copying what they saw on screen. Likewise, the camera lingered on a "do not climb, danger of death" sign at the foot of the crane, and there was at least one other example which escapes me at the moment.)

the Doctor also introduced her new device... a sonic swiss army knife- "only without the knife cos only idiots carry knives"

whatever next though? every time the Doctor does something risky a warning flashes up on screen saying "do not try this at home"?
If not for the fact that I was playing railway geek and had picked up on the third rail issue (and analysed why the line was there) I probably wouldn't have noticed either of the other two for what they were.

Both of the spoken lines were reasonable things for the characters (a nurse and a pacifist) to say, even if the first was slightly misinformed.

I was actually referring to the Electric Dreams story ("The Commuter") that was being discussed, rather than the new Doctor Who story, but yes that was good too, apart from the pointless death and subsequent funeral scene, which quite upset me. Not what I want from my favourite brand of escapist entertainment. (Actually I was quite upset about the train driver copping it too, but at least we hadn't been introduced to the character and encouraged to like them first.) Apart from that it was very good, and I thought Jodie Whittaker was excellent.

To be fair, even on lines with overhead electrification (not a lot of that around Sheffield either, since the closure of most of the W**dh**d route), I've witnessed people thinking the running rails may be live.

Reminds me of watching an episode of The Bill where they were pursuing a suspect, one minute they're drivng down the main road about five minutes from my house, next minute they're going along the road where my Dads office was located, some 12 miles away!

episode of Boon where someone is chased off the end of the platform at Nottingham Station, under the Carrington Street Bridge and comes out at Ratcliffe power station about 10 miles away

Most tv/film drama uses artistic licence with the geography of their filming locations- it can be very distracting if you are familiar with the area. It can also be interesting if you know what the camera is deliberately avoiding (in one film I watched the camera pans stopped in order to avoid showing a sex shop [it was visible in reflections in another scene])

At least the train was consistent. There was an episode of Electric Dreams on Channel 4 called "The Commuter". One minute Timothy Spall's on a South West Trains 450. Next minute he's jumping through the doors of a green train - as shown on the trailer!

Actually, from memory I think they did some pretty terrible CGI in the episode to "paint" the train in the correct livery. But they certainly missed it from the trailer.
Bearing in mind this all fun stuff, the train wasn't consistent - as I said, the exterior night shot had toplights (looked a little like a set of 153s) and the rest was a mk2a/b. I was hoping for a Dalek looking for its reserved seat!

OK, so alien invasions - not a problem.
Humanoid with two hearts called a Time Lord regenerates from male to female - not a problem.
Teleportation into space using devices cobbled together in backstreet Sheffield workshop - not a problem.
Train might be shown with the wrong type of locomotive - BIG PROBLEM.
Always such a funny thread when people pick over the detail on such programmes. It's fiction, it has to be filmed somewhere within reasonable budget and accessibility, and, oh, did I mention, IT'S FICTION.

Ah, but the dramatic concept of "suspended disbelief" works best when the element requiring disbelief (such as the time travel and regenerating Doctor) is set within an otherwise believable setting.

And this is a railway Forum so hardly surprising that people want to comment on the railway elements.

A certain old Gerry Anderson series always used to commence with the stern warning "Captain Scarlet is indestructible. You are not. Remember this - do not try to imitate him!"

Only on certain broadcasts, and as far as I'm aware not on the master tapes (all home media releases have lacked it as far as I'm aware).

I wonder when they brought that warning in, because although I've heard people mention it before, I watched Captain Scarlet religiously throughout my early 70s childhood (would have been on LWT) and never heard it once.

True; in this thread we need to either stick to railway elements or we can move it into General Discussion.

During the original broadcast I believe, but considering the fragmented nature of ITV at the time and the fact that it almost certainly wasn't applied to the original masters, it's not surprising that it was absent from reruns.
