My understanding is you basically get the tax back you pay on your subs so if you're in the 20% tax bracket you get 20% of your subs refunded to you.

Your 'understanding' is wrong. Union contributions are not eligible for tax relief.

For the avoidance of doubt, I was wrong about claiming on union contributions. I've apologised already but I'll do it again. I was trying to be helpful and I'm sorry to have spread false information.

Is it possible that the confusion has arisen as there are some professions (eg. teaching) where you can claim back the cost of your union membership? Of course, rail unions are not eligible, but if you pay for some non-union professional bodies such as the IRO or CILT, then you are entitled to tax relief for this.

That's it exactly, Mojo. I'm coming from a profession where my union was eligible and mistakenly believed the rail unions would also be eligible.
