According to the 'One Mile at a Time' blog Air Belgium is on the brink of Liquidation

Yes, though I believe a solution has been found so they live another day.

A few weeks ago they pulled their flights from Charleroi to Hong Kong because the company UTOUR who promised to fill their seats went bust.

They then said they would focus on ACMI flying, which they were already doing for Air France to a few West African destinations. They are now doing the same for BA to Abu Dhabi, Dubai and I think possibly Cairo either now or in the recent past. Reviews elsewhere indicate it's not great, with a tired cabin and delays. Flyertalk is annoyed because it doesn't have F or premium economy.

Interesting blog on the new SQ 21/22 Singapore - Newark flights. All about sometimes flying farther than the shortest route to save time and fuel.

https://www.flightradar24.com/blog/...ht-is-saving-time-and-fuel-by-flying-farther/

The shortest distance between two points on the earth is a straight line, but it it may not be the fastest. When Singapore Airlines relaunched its Singapore-New York flights last week, the route retook the title of world’s longest flight by distance. With a block time of 18 hours 45 minutes SQ21 from New York to Singapore is also the longest scheduled flight in the world. But strong high altitude winds have shortened flight times substantially this week for both flight legs, even while the flights are flying farther than the Great circle route.

14 hours 40 minutes is my longest ever flight (HKG-ORD), some part of me wants to try this new flight out but as it is all premium or business, need to save the pennies for a long time..

Hope not, as their A340 was on a BA flight to the Middle East this afternoon!

I think they have been bailed out for now. Would imagine all will carry on while the RR engine trouble keeps their frames busy but then will be left to quietly die.

Just to end up flying more or less over BFS an hour or two later :s
Happens all the time with connections, so nothing unique here. It assumes all traffic is going to one place but with heaps of US connections alone from Heathrow, huge volume of connections (and to the rest of the world, making the shuttle to London a good choice). And with Dublin and pre clearance a short drive away, business will vote with its feet.

Presumably mostly changes for the summer schedules.

The interesting one is Phoenix, taking out 30% of capacity. I could never understand how it justifies 10 747s a week. Is it reall6 that popular a place? Or is it cargo / connections?

CAA stats for Phoenix show over 23,000 passengers flew LHR <> Phoenix in August 2018, a 5,000 or increase on the same period in 2017. So 23,170 over the 40 flights or so each way would mean an average of just shy of 300 passengers per flight.

No idea if connections either side or cargo but certainly seems a popular place.

Although it is listed as a decrease, the route itself is actually gaining seats - as AA is adding a daily 777-200 from Phoenix to Heathrow from the end of March until the end of October.

The removal of the additional daily flight three times a week is purely owing to American commencing direct service between Phoenix and London. Overall capacity is increasing, rather than decreasing.

The Phoenix metro area is a growing market, and Sky Harbor is being developed as something of a hub for American, post the US Airways merger.

The only European destinations from PHX are London and Frankfurt, the latter with Condor, which has no connections feed at the US end, and only their slightly odd historic interline agreement with Lufthansa at the German end.

BA and AA can feed in and out at both ends of the route, as well as service the strong ‘origin and destination’ demand point-to-point between London and Phoenix and vice versa.

The same applies on a lot of BA/AA Transatlantic routes - it’s a very successful business model. That’s why Nashville has proved so popular so quickly, and has gone daily so soon after launch.

Thanks all, interesting, and interesting that AA are upping (presumably in agreement with BA)

My parents fly to the states a lot (all parts) and Phoenix has never been a consideration for them; the have been to most of the central / west airports served from LHR. On top of this I’ve never heard of anyone flying there, hence my surprise at the capacity.

I believe the main reason is cargo but it was also a huge US Airways and previously America West hub, and only since the ~2014 merger did US and AA routes start to be consolidated and US routes come under Oneworld, and the specific BA/AA revenue sharing agreement. So it’s now a useful hub with multiple western and central US connections without having to route through LAX, ORD or JFK, and probably provides some reasonable incremental growth in passenger numbers too. Phoenix and Tucson are also large commercial centres in themselves, not least the former US Airways HQ in Chandler, AZ.

I think it is mostly popular for connections. PHX is a big AA hub (same alliance as BA).

The commercial background actually predates the alliances. Before US Airways joined Star Alliance, there was a relatively long-standing and robust codeshare agreement between British Airways and US Airways. In fact, at one point, I have a feeling that there was a plan to for BA to take a stake, if not takeover US.

That set up some passenger flows which have proved very resilient; even when US joined Star and the interline agreements changed, significant numbers of passengers on the teatime US flight from Salt Lake City to Phoenix were actually connecting onto the BA London flight. That was replicated from other stations such as Las Vegas (pre BA directs).

A Lion Air 737 MAX8 has crashed shortly after take off from Jakarta. Rescue crews on the scene report no sign of survivors. News is assuming all 188 souls on board perished. Very sadly another chapter in that airlines terrible safety record. A terrible loss of life.

Edit: very early reports this morning were saying heavy thunderstorms in the area, but later reports now say it was sunny.

First ever loss of a 737 Max? Aussie media are reporting that all of their government employees are now instructed not use Lion Air.

Good, they have an appalling safety record.

Yes first loss, and a dramatic one at that. This particular frame was just months old.

Arrived at Aberdeen Airport at 2005 last night intending to catch the 2040 flight to Birmingham - not for the faint hearted.

Biggest worry was the notorious "single file of hell" Security Line at ABZ.

However to my pleasant suprise the brand new (to me) Security Area is both spacious and was completely bereft of patrons affording a one minute pass through and onto the flight with no problem.

Well done Aberdeen for this much needed improvement.

Only disappointment was a 1 hour 10 minute flight on a Q400 that an Embraer would have done in an hour.

Very comprehensive summary, thanks Ben.

I understand (some of) the CityFlyer cancellations are due to on-time performance meaning frames are out of kilt for the post-weekend rush out of LCY, rather than necessarily a reflection of demand.

Jet Airways inaugural Mumbai - Manchester landed this morning, an hour ahead of schedule. No information about load. Despite Jet's fairly public financial trouble, long may they continue. Next major arrival is Ethiopian's Addis via Brussels service in December.

Been reported elsewhere that Icelandair are to buy fellow Icelandic based airline WOW Air, subject to approval from the relevant authorities in Iceland. Both airlines will continue to operate under their respective brands according to what I've read (news courtesy of the site 'Business Traveller')

Wow! Didn't see that coming (sorry).

Really though, the value of WOW by Icelandair is next to peanuts.

WOW's network scaled way back prior to formal announcement, though it does look suspiciously like they removed duplicate Icelandair routes.

Great for Newcastle. The next best option for being in central London in business hours is the LNER Flying Scotaman arriving just shy of 10am. But this flight arrives about that time but leaving at a much more sociable hour.
I understand this service is actually the Aberdeen to City route that calls in Newcastle

An Air Astana EMB190 is reporting out of control over Lisbon. Erratic flight path and speed and altitude. Reportedly asked ATC for permission to ditch in the ocean. Now under control and heading for Baja in Spai
