For a couple of weeks I have been getting the following intermittent error message:

Safari can't open the page "https`;//www.virgintrains.co.uk/". The error is "The operation couldn't be completed. Protocol error" NSPOSIXErrorDomain:100

I tweeted them and was told to try a different browser, so I installed Firefox and sure enough it works fine on that.

Anyone else had a problem?

Is it because you are using an accent and a semicolon instead of a colon after the https?

Don't think so, I don't enter a web address, just put "virgin trains" into Google and click on the resulting links, which is where I keep getting the error page. Oh, I just tried it on my other MacBook Air in Southport, and it works okay. Must be just the Hereford one then. It's not a problem now I can get into it on Firefox, but I was just puzzled as it worked fine until a couple of weeks ago and I haven't altered anything, to my knowledge.

Off to install Firefox on this machine too  .

 I was waiting for someone to pick me up on that! I couldn't remember what it was called. iOS is just for iPhones isn't it?

Hehe, sorry! I couldn’t help myself what with this being the most pedantic forum of all those I’ve been a member of!

iOS is for iPhone and iPad, Mac OS X for desktop and laptop computers. The only others are WatchOS and TVOS which are self-explanatory...

Regarding the issue in the original post, this has to be a browser issue.

And when considering an alternative, there are various options available.
I always associate that with Android for some reason....
That'll be because they're both made by Google.

However Firefox Quantum is considered by several experts to be a better choice these days.
...if you have major concerns about memory usage, security, or run complex applications in your browser, Firefox may be the better pick...
Firefox is considered to be a wiser choice than Chrome if privacy is a concern. There are a lot of concerns about Google in this area (beyond the scope of this thread), and so it may be worth considering alternatives.

@trainophile I don't suppose there is a chance that you tried to click through to the Virgin Trains website from the Nectar website is there? The website had been working for me before (indeed, confirmed by myself earlier in the thread), however yesterday I clicked through from Nectar to use an offer and I then got an error message, since then I have not been able to access the site as I get a "Safari Can't Open the Page" error, even if I type the URL direct. It works fine in Private browsing mode.

Interesting about the Private browsing, I just tried that and yes it works. Don't think I would have tried to connect via the Nectar website, tbh I didn't even know there was such a thing.

Thanks though, at least I can now access it on Safari even if it is in Private mode.

They’re offering me 1,000 bonus points for a booking. The temptation was too good to turn down!
