Ideally no more than 90 minutes on the train with as few changes as possible. This will be for a group of 10-15 quite mature old lads who are just looking for somewhere with a good few bars and restaurants that aren't too far apart. Lively is fine, but not Amsterdam business. Any suggestions folks? Cheers!

‘s Hertogenbosch (Den Bosch) would be a good choice. Beautiful old town with old market square and cafés and restaurants around it. There also a boat tour under the city thats well worth the ride; the old town is built on bridges.
There are IC trains every 10 minutes. The route is part of a trial, introducing a 10 minute frequency IC train on the busiest lines. Journey takes 31 minutes.

Breda (38 minutes by train) and Utrecht (48 minutes by train) are very recommendable. Breda has a lot of cafés in the vicinity of the Grote Kerk (Big Church), you're sure to find something to eat and to drink there. Utrecht is bigger, and has a lot to offer - you can take a canal tour if you like.

@Reepham Lincs. The 10 minute IC service is now permanent. Trains run every 10 minutes until approx. 20:00, after that services go to a 15 minute interval.

Another vote from me for Den Bosch - although just about anywhere in the Netherlands seems to be worth visiting and has good food and drink! Bitterballen are a Dutch speciality and are a rather good snack to go with a nice Belgian beer.

If you do go to Den Bosch, you should definitely visit Jan de Groot's bakery. They make Bossche Bollen (chocolate balls), a local delicacy.

Weert, Roermond, Helmond, Venlo, Sittard, Maastricht; so much choice!

I'd go for Maastricht, although the station is about 10 minutes walk from the city centre.

Know everything about it. Untill the river Maas not so much is happening. But the Vrijthof is too touristic in my eyes. Just google: Bier, Maastricht on Google (Maps) and you get adresses.

Please record another vote in favour of Den Bosch. The Bossche Bol is one of the nicest things I’ve ever put in my mouth, and the town is lovely.

A good point for Den Bosch is that it has no university and so not real students.

Venlo is a great, small-scale place on the river. And if you get bored of NL (as if?), it's about 2km walk to Germany. About 20 mins from Eindhoven.

Sorry; Eindhoven - Venlo is 39 minutes. And although close by you do not want to walk to Kaldenkirchen, Germany. It is about 6 kilometers. Than is Tegelen even closer to the citycenter of Kaldenkirchen.
