Do the S Tube Stock sets stay on one line i.e District, Hammersmith & City etc .
The reason I am asking I have spent many hours on Farringdon Station getting tube sets & Thameslink Class 700,s but have never seen 7 car set 21381 /21382.
Thought it might be say on the District Line which obviously don't go through Farringdon

If a set is allocated to the District Line it will probably stay there for the whole day. Circle and H&C are interworked though.

If a train starts on a Circle line, it will generally stay on a Circle line. Reforms during the day between the District and C&H are just as likely whilst trains are reversing at Barking or Edgware Road as they are when reversing at Hammersmith, for instance.

S7s will cycle around all three lines (and depots) over the course of their workings. Heavy maintenance is not carried out at C&H stabling points, with some sets stabling at Ealing Common or Upminster to facilitate this. Those trains could then be allocated to District line workings the next day.

Today, 21381/2 is working D062, and will stable at Lillie Bridge at 0022 (unless reformed). It must then work a District line service tomorrow (although there is special working and I haven't checked the timetable notice for any alterations, so it may not be out at all over the weekend).

From memory when I used the services around Edgware road, occasionally Circle Line trains coming up from High St Ken that should have terminated at Edgware Road would continue in service clockwise, either as a Circle or H&C service, whereas I can't think of a single instance where a terminating Wimbleware would continue as a Circle or H&C service!

That's usually done if the service has been disrupted and it's the quickest way to get the diagrams back to where they should be.

From memory, there is one Wimbleware diagram which is booked to turn into a Circle at Edgware Road, and one Circle which turns into a Wimbleware a short time later - I guess that's to do with stock rotation?

One Circle and one H&C are booked to start and finish at Ealing Common depot.
Three H&C trains are booked to start/finish at Upminster depot.

Nothing booked to alternate from one line to the other (not withstanding the above, but they don't run to Wimbledon), but reformations do regularly happen for stabling purposes as you suggest. Circles getting extended through the City is a regular service recovery tactic, dependent on crew availability.

That's interesting, because on several occasions when there was no disruption I have been caught out when trying my usual tactic to get a seat in the evening peak from Paddington Praed Street of riding a Wimbleware up to Edgware Road and staying on it only to have it turn into a Circle continuing clockwise! It is nearly always one particular diagram, 073, which seems to do this.

I expect that will be due to where 073 stables, although I don't have time to look it up. 'Stock and crew' deformations can take place at any time to get trains onto diagrams that finish at certain depots for maintenance requirements. 073 certainly isn't booked to move onto Circles.

I'm afraid so!

Checking the WTTs, 073 starts from Ealing Common and stables at Parsons Green - so it's quite a convenient service to take a 'fresh' train off and move onto C&H services (Ealing Common is a heavy maintenance depot for S7 stock - none of the sidings on the C&H can do more than train prep and minor fault rectification).

Taking the evening peak to mean between 1600 and 1900, 073 crosses the following trains at Edgware Road (Outer Rail - I've assumed that it hasn't become a Barking based on your posts):
  • 1609 - 205 (starts Hammersmith, stables Hammersmith)
  • 1729 - 215 (starts Hammersmith, stables Barking)
  • 1849 - 204 (starts Hammersmith, stables Triangle)
All, therefore, would be candidates to get a 'fresh' train onto the C&H - or a train needing minor attention down to Hammersmith. It's possible too that a further 'stock and crew' could happen back on the District with a train that stables Ealing or Upminster.

I think diagram 204 or 215 rings a bell as to what it became, yes...

So, next time I try that trick, if 073 turns up I should hold back for the 074...?
