I'm looking to buy tickets from Newcastle to Manchester airport on the 29th Dec returning on 1st Jan. Would it be best to wait till a later date to book? There doesn't seem to be any cheap seats at the minute

I'm not surprised; Advances (the cheap, fixed-train-only tickets) have not yet been released for that route on that date. In fact, according to the section on TransPennine Express here, it is possible that they will not be released at all (it is not quite clear whether Advances for that date/route are "closed" for now, or "closed" full stop).

It may well also be the case that services on those dates are affected by engineering work.

Oh that's not good. I'm catching a plane so hopefully I don't get delayed by engineering work. Would you wait and see what the prices are in a few weeks or just book something a little cheaper on train split?

Wait. They will open up eventually. Patience is a virtue with these things. If you are buying walkup fares, even splits, there is no gain booking a long way in advance.

It's a different line of route but Virgin West Coast are not expecting to open 29th December until 22nd November and 1st January on 26th November, so it shows the kind of time frames that the TOCs can be dealing with.

I’d wait rather than pay for flexible tickets.

I’d also look at going on Megabus/National Express if price is important.

Alternatively, TPE have released £13.90 Advance fares from Carlisle to MIA for your date - and NCL-CAR is relatively inexpensive for a flexible ticket (you may also get Advances released on this Northern route nearer the time).

The revised timetable for the engineering works in Manchester on that date would appear to mean substantial service reductions on the Leeds/Manchester route. It may be that no cheap advances will be released.
