There is still just the 1 444 and 1 450 in the livery, and that 444 hasn't worked in nearly a year. There are more 158s and 159s in the new livery.

Both went up to Farnham CSD on 30th Oct, 444040 is still in there awaiting to enter service again after passing its exam on 30/10.

A side query, is it the same driver who crews 5P79 and 5A99 (i.e. do they stay with the train overnight at Haslemere) or do they taxi back and someone else taxi out to bring the train back Sunday morning?

Why can’t the train berth in one of the platforms at Havant given both platforms are bidirectional.

It’ll probably be 2 separate taxis to and from Haslemere, chargeable to Network rail. Brave move putting it on the last one from Waterloo though.

And in regards to not stabling it at Havant, it’s because the sectional appendix says so, or doesn’t say so in this case. I can’t think of any physical reason not to stable it there overnight.

Absolute madness putting it on 2345 on a Saturday if that is what is happening, as I also believe it's being used Monday morning for a press shindig with the MD and others. It's almost as if someone wants the press launch to go wrong.... Why bring a train into passenger service for a shuttle for one day before a press launch when it's been out of traffic for a year........

What Pompey fan said.

Trains can only be berthed on dead end (bay) platforms and at a few other select locations detailed in the sectional appendix and Fratton and Havant aren't . Haslemere up loop is ok as are all platforms at Guildford.

Surely the shuttle is a sensible idea? It’s spends a large amount of time waiting to form the next service, it’s unlikely to be rammed full and is passing Fratton in every trip if it needs to be swapped out.

The round trip to London is odd!

The unit shouldn't be in passenger traffic until Monday's press launch. If swr want to show a sparkling refurbed train off, using it for axdwy before hand isn't tge way to go. By all means run it around ecs if wanting to get the cobwebs out.

To make sure it works before the event?

I agree running it to make sure it works is a good idea, but all it needs is some idiot to start doing graffiti inside and a lot of work is caused unnecessarily. Stabling overnight at Haslemere isn't great either as it's unstaffed overnight unless swr intend providing security to stop people tagging the outside of the train.

I would agree it is an odd diagram to put it on. If I was them I'd swap it out before it does 2P78 to Waterloo!

Fully refurbished, and yet it retains an orange pole! Wouldn't have thought that was part of the colour palette!

Yeah, that was my train, I'm a little disappointed I didn't get to work it! I've put a full set of interior shots on Flickr-including the wireless phone charging in first!https://www.flickr.com/search/?user...te-taken-desc&text=444040 interior&view_all=1

It seems to be a bit half hearted to me, they went to the trouble and expense of reseating all of first class and trashing it in the process, as well as removing bike spaces (stupid if you ask me), the buffet and guard's office, without even repainting all the grab rails! The lack of a vestibule door in the ex buffet carriage also just makes it look a bit cheap and nasty sadly. This should've been an opportunity to make good train great, but SWR have thrown it away.

Orange poles, seats with no view whatsoever, random pillars in the DMCO, 2+2 first class...well they've successfully done yet another thing wrong lol.

Yes, sorry about that but the power supply problems meant we had nowhere t put 444030 except in front of 444040 meaning the swap was inevitable. I'm a little disappointed I didn't get to work 444040 but it'll happen soon I guess! There are 12 additional standard seats in the leading (composite) coach and 8 more in the second coach where the office and buffet used to be. Pictures are on flickr including a shot of the wireless phone charging tables in first! First class is still only at the London end and both cycle spaces remain in place. https://www.flickr.com/search/?user...te-taken-desc&text=444040 interior&view_all=1

Thanks for posting. Looks OK, but I'm surprised that the grabrails are still orange. What are the seats in 1st Class? They look like Compin as in the 450s

The orange handpoles certainly clash. I wonder whose idea it was to retain those (at least for now).
I’m surprised that the internal PIS are still the LED style. I’m also disappointed at the railway in general with the dreary grey leather seats and dreary grey colours on the outside of so many trains now. Still, I suppose “this is what people are telling us they want” (said a customer relations consultant).
I know what the SWR symbol supposedly represents but still can’t help but thinking if Lord Sugar ran the railway the designer would have been fired.
Putting the whole thing together it has the feel of someone ‘further up the ladder’ being told they had a deadline to get this first (quasi-full) refurbishment out.

Ffs. They go to the trouble of changing all the seat-top grab handles from orange to blue, and then don't do the poles the same!!
It's not something to do with visually impaired compliance is it? But then the grab handles would have had to stay orange if that were the case surely?

Interesting that both bike spaces remain at the moment. Hopefully someone has seen sense in that regard. I think I’ve mentioned it before but with the extra seats now available, they’d have been better REMOVING two/four seats per carriage and replacing them with full size luggage racks (Ala GWR west/turbo fleet). That way you’d actually have a net gain in seats and fewer arguments. Whoever designed these units and this refurb seems to have forgotten that people choose to travel with SWR for leisure purposes.

They travel to Woking for Heathrow, Airport Parkway for SOU airport, Southampton central for the cruise terminal, then you get people going away to Bournemouth, Weymouth, Portsmouth for a dirty weekend away, the Isle of Wight via portsmouth, Southampton and Lymington. All of the above can involve oversized baggage with nowhere to put them, this then leads to arguments as large bags are placed on seats or between seats, which then prevent people from sitting.

Imagine how many fold up bikes you could store in a 158/159 style luggage bin. It’s not hard, even 377s have luggage bays at the expense of seats.

A couple of comments:
1. They haven’t just retained orange grab pokes, they’ve actually added two where the buffet and corridor were.
2. By my count the accessible coach now has 12 additional seats, 4 in place of the buffet, 4 in place of the guards office and 4 where the corridor ran beside the buffet.
3. I thought the PIS was supposed to be brought up to date with the Thameslink and class 707 units.
