TRIVIA/OPINION - Which is the dullest stretch of railway in the British Isles?

I find the ECML extremely dull for the most part. Also most of the Merseyrail Northern Line from Hunts Cross to Southport. Rather off subject but nothing will ever compare to a 48 hour coach journey from Santa Cruz De La Sierra in Bolivia to Buenos Aires in Argentina. After the first hour of "Oh wow, it is amazing, it seems to go on for ever" it quickly becomes "Oh wow, it really does just go on forever".

The view of the river, Tobacco Warehouse (and others) provide some relief between Moorfields and Sandhills. And further north you have probably the only stretch of railway in England where you might - just might - see Red Squirrel from a train.

Pretty much the entire WCML south of Preston, but the route round via Weedon is pretty dull. 15 minutes of just nothing. At least it's over quickly.

Inspired by the recent threads about the Sutton loop, I'd like to ask forum members: which in your opinion is the dullest stretch of track in these fair isles? You may include Eire, the Isle of Man or any island dotted around the coast of mainland Britain. Not Sodor though. Evocative and florid descriptions greatly encouraged!

As you would expect, I'm going to plump for the aforementioned route between Sutton and where it meets the SWR just south of Wimbledon. IMO you have to go a long way to beat this rainy-grey island-platform monotony with it's horrific vista of semi-detached after semi-detached after semi-detached with nothing other than the odd park to break up the drabness. Blink and you won't miss it. Oh, you might catch a glimpse of the Northern line sidings at Morden South if that's your bag.

Newcastle to Sunderland - A dreary and awful journey, through various **** holes and old industrial areas that are just bleak....then you arrive in Sunderland Station!!!

An unsurprisingly large amount of my route card has been nominated in this thread. The flatness isn't everyone's cup of tea, I'll admit.

I've got to agree with the nominations for the southern ECML too, it may be how often I've traveled over it, but it's just so dull. Never been a big fan of the GEML either.

Sunderland definitely....the station itself is below ground and so outdated now. It’s a dark and miserable station. It’s in desperate need of investment and regeneration. It’s basically like a concrete central island stuck in a dark cave, with a few seats.
If the recent reports are correct that Sunderland's main train station might be moved to the site of the current civic centre with the entrance at Mowbray Park/Park lane Interchange, Sunderland could have a station to be proud of, good riddance to the current effort of a train station.

Hopefully. The city definitely needs a modern railway station/transport hub. Would be a good place for a new station. There is a lot of regeneration work starting to happen i.e: The old Vaux Site so hopefully this will happen.

I love the Northern City Line.

I propose the Cathcart Circle Lines.
Cathcart Circle has some interesting station architecture, although only Maxwell Park looked cared-for on my last visit.
How about Grimsby - Cleethorpes?

By contrast, arriving in Newcastle by train is one of the most thrilling urban experiences in Europe.

WCML north of the London suburbs, south of Colwich is very dull.

Non GB..... Stockholm to Narvik - 23 hours on a train.
Wow...mountains, a lake, and a billion trees!
Hours later......mountains, a lake, a billion trees.....
Did have a cinema carriage though, which was different.

That’s quite often the thing about travelling in different countries isn’t it?
We get used to travelling through quite a wide variety of scenery in fairly short distances in the UK.
I’ve visited quite a few countries over the years and realised how unusual it is in the UK.

I think most of my routes have been covered on here too! Must admit there's no particularly line I drive that I like or dislike any more than the others, as long as the train starts and stops where it should!

Some great old industrial architecture as you trundle slowly past Grimsby Docks

There's some fairly pleasant countryside once you get past Gateshead

A stretch of the national network wired for 1500V DC - just close your eyes and pretend an EM2 is on the front of your train!

Personally, I really enjoy Grimsby to Cleethorpes - plenty to see as you wind your way through the docks.

I haven't travelled on that much of the network but I'd say some bits between Swindon and Bristol and Bristol and Exeter. Had no inclination to look out of the window. A stark contrast from earlier on between Dover and Folkestone (which is one of my favourite parts of the network) and HS1 (the non-tunnel bits).

Thankfully the Riviera Line was a massive improvement.

Have to disagree. There is a distinct lack of mountains until you reach Kiruna heading northwards. Narvik-Kiruna has to be one of the best stretches of track in the world? Climbing up the steep sides of dramatic Fjords behind a powerful electric locomotive into the arctic tundra, complete with wild reindeer and snow flying past the windows. That was heaven for me.

I broke the journey heading northwards, so perhaps that's why I didn't find it so dull. I found the contrast between Southern and Northern Sweden/Norway interesting.

I find the Southern ends of the ECML and MML incredibly dull most of the time. Leeds-York is up there too.

The trouble is if you travel on a certain route often it becomes dull despite how interesting to others it may be

This is, I think very, true, I was travelling from Leuchars to North Queensferry the other morning and as the sun was coming up the view over the Firth of Forth towards Edinburgh in the distance was (IMO) nothing less than stunning. I had a quick look around the carriage and nobody else was bothered to look out the window.
