Northbound heavy rail services that should call at Rotherham Central are been diverted skipping Rotherham. This is because the tram driver in Rotherham Central has locked himself out of the driving cab. Cab key dispatched by road!!!!

Oh dear. I feel for him. We have all done this at some point if you have been on long enough. 321's and 322's were murder if you forgot to carry a spare BR1 key. He won't do it again though.

I wonder how long I can make my location on this f
What's wrong with climbing through the window? (Pendolino drivers have to!)

As long as the appropriate rules are followed. Here is an excerpt from Module TW1 S17:

TW1 S17 said:
Section 17 Gaining access to the driving cab
...
Section 17.3 Side window working
If it is not possible to gain access to the driving cab through means of normal operation of the cab bulkhead door, then side window working must be implemented. Prior to proceeding with side window working, you must give consideration to the following factors:
  • The geometry of the window
  • The geometry of the driver
  • The possibility of the driver becoming stuck ("failed") in the side window section
  • Whether or not there is a large audience
Authorisation must be sought from the relevant train operating companies' control before proceeding with side window working.

Section 17.4 Person in lieu of porky
If, according to section 17.3, the risks of side window working are considered high then a pilotman (person in lieu of porky) can be used instead of the train driver. The pilotman must be deemed competent by the relevant train operating companies' control to proceed with side window working and the pilotman must consider the risks in section 17.3 before proceeding.

The Star are reporting a derailment? https://t.co/98dNHDj0tn

One of Sheffield’s new tram trains has derailed at Rotherham Central station.
The derailment happened short time ago, leading to services being cancelled between Tinsley and Parkgate.

Trains between Sheffield and Doncaster are also believed to be bypassing Rotherham entirely.

One of the single biggest delays during the Derby resignalling project was an EMT driver being unable to access the cab on a 222 because of a worn out key.

Unfortunately T keys have been cheapened in their material and last nowhere near as long as they once did (despite being extortionately priced)

I've gone through a 158 cab window.

Then McDonalds, Burger King and KFC arrived at many stations.

Nowadays I could still climb through but I'd be walking down the train wearing the window frame and the fire brigade would be cutting it off me at the next available stop. :o

Thought you were going to say that you got through the cab window, then fast food, then you couldn't get back out again...! ;)

Crikey that is going to cost them a horrific amount of money. I assume They’ll be liable for delay minutes and cancellations and everyone on the railway if they are the delay reason ?

I feel for him. Managed to lock myself out of a 153 cab down Eastcroft once after leaving carriage key on the desk before getting out to change points. I can still hear the roar of laughter from the Shunters and entire station after being forced to fess up and ask for a replacement over the radio. Have always, religiously stowed it back in it's holster ever since, even if I know i'll need it again 30 seconds later.

Do you mean you only have one? Most staff I know start getting worried if they're down to 2 (same as master keys).

The one in my holster is my emergency key and is almost never used. Last time it came out to play was because someone else had a rounded key and a rounded lock to contend with.

Keep a spare in my bag, but wasn't usual practice to take your bag with you when fuelling units.

Do conductors not have a cab key for the Tram Trains? I'm pretty sure they all do for the standard tram vehicles (stowing their bags in the back cab).

It's not all that uncommon at St Albans Centre Siding since 700s have been introduced, but there's usually another one around before long anyway, and you're not stood on tha main line while you wait.

I really, really hope that's true (and brilliant job if it isn't). The only thing I love more than the possibility that there is a formal regulation for climbing through a window, is the possibility that there is a formal term for usage where the driver gets stuck.

When the 321's were brand new , new arrivals were parked (from BREL) in the CS at Cambridge.

I had a group of local stakeholders / customers around - and having been around the PSB , decided to show them these brand new units. No PTS in those days , so we clambered in from the track and some spark closed the door behind us. No air in the unit. So we were basically locked in.

I considered dropping through the driver's droplight , but luckily there was an 08 batting around - so he came up alongside , and with considerable levity used his carriage key to get us out. Was I embarrassed .....(the guests were hugely amused.

The conductors key was in the back cab. So no staff could get in the cab at either end.
