Travelling IC with DB. Decided to go 1st class as priced not much more - Bremen to Leipzig.

Well, they've learned from Arriva XC..... the catering on-board is now terrible. 4 hour journey and one scabby sandwich on offer. I take it that catering is now outsourced? It is crap!

DB First Class has never offered complimentary catering, instead it is priced more reasonably at a multiplier of about 1.5. If they've started giving you a free cheese butty then that's a considerable upgrade. Previously the deal (which I prefer) was that you could order anything from the menu but it would be brought to your seat on proper crockery etc.

That doesn't really tally with my experience. The catering in 1st class over there is paid for not complementary so it's very different to UK.

I travelled several times in 1st class with DB on ICE and once on an IC service in early September and found the catering to be good on the whole. The crew were sometimes a little absent but there were usually plenty of opportunities to order food and drink and nothing was ever out of stock. I had an excellent breakfast of scrambled eggs and sausages on one ICE. On other I had a tasty sandwich. And on the IC whilst I didn't have any food they were clearly serving the full menu as I saw someone get some sandwiches and another got some soup. I think it might have been bad luck perhaps?

No catering car. Stewardess with a tiny basket with very limited stock (2 items) of cold items from Ditsch. Very poor

The double deck IC trains (IC2) were ordered as a stop-gap measure as the introduction of the ICx trains (now ICE4) was delayed. Now that DB are planning to significantly expand their Fernverkehr network by 2030, the IC2 will play a bigger role than originally planned - they will be used for services which do not or rarely exceed 160 km/h.

The trains are a follow-on order to a batch of regional express trains, so they could be ordered without having to put it out to tender. This is why there's no bistro area in them.

To overcome not having a catering offering at all DB Fernverkehr have introduced at seat service, the operation of which has been outsourced to LSG SkyChefs.

The advertised offer is "snacks and drinks," but such a restricted offer isn't exactly impressive. Very few ICs now carry a full restaurant.

OT. As I will be travelling XC for the first time, what catering is available? It will be Edinburgh to Oxford.
Ad to Twindexx IC2, yes they don't have a bistro car. Partially because it is seen AS uneconomic.
In the past, some RE regional trains even had Café ateas in them so with a 6th carriage, a bistro would have been possible.

At the beginning of the year I had an IC2 from Hannover to Leipzig. The on board catering had beer and snacks (a tray of tapas) so no complaints here. :)

It's not a full restaurant. Menus can be found on www.bahn.de/ic2.

I took an DB IC from Salzburg to Frankfurt earlier this year (6 hours) and loved it (it started off as a EuroCity until it got to Munich though I think). I ate a couple of rounds of wurst ordered from the dining car in the next carriage. Eaten on a plate with proper crockery at a four-table (I was seemingly the only person in first class so had it all to myself).

But was it a DB or OeBB service though?

I can't say I'm that impressed with IC2s, and I am no big fan of ICE-Ts either. ICE1, ICE2, ICE3 and Metropolitan sets are fine though. Not been on an ICE4 yet

Well you’d not be impressed with ICE-2 Tz212 Potsdam today it caught fire at Hannover Hbf whilst working a Berlin to Koln service. Not badly damaged I’m glad to say but emergency services in attendance and much disruption.

I was on an ICE 3 to Leipzig the other day and within 10 minutes of getting on board I was in the buffet car eating sausages and drinking a beer.

German style! ;).

I prefer the ICE 1 and ICE 2, they are nicer to travel on IMO, but I haven't yet travelled on an ICE 4, but I plan to.

Personally I prefer an ICE 3 over an ICE 1!
Especially between Koeln & Frankfurt, or Ingolstadt & Nuernberg
