Until the end of November a daytime coal train ran Monday to Fridays from Redcar to Fiddlers Ferry Power Station via the Calder Valley. Since the beginning of December this flow seems to have diverted to Drax Power Station.

I just wondered why, and whether a new coal flow to Fiddlers Ferry replaced this one? Is it likely that the Redcar-Fiddlers Ferry flow will be re-instated?

Presumably this would be taking coal from the former British Steel?

AFAIK, the two contracts are not directly connected.

The Redcar to Fiddlers traffic has ended for this winter (Fiddlers is receiving sufficient coal from Portbury);
the Drax traffic is to run until mid-January, possibly longer depending on demand.

If that is the case, then the Fiddlers Ferry train that ran on 30 Nov could have been the last ever coal train up the Calder Valley. I'm not sure whether Fiddlers Ferry has won any contracts for coal powered electricity generation after this winter.

Is it coming from the bulk terminal ?
My railway geography isn't very good for this area, but the likes of realtimetrains and railcam use 'Redcar High Level (Flhh)' as their origin for these trains.

...

I hope Fiddlers ferry does not close
We are dangerously short of generating capacity, and the 5GW coal is outputting is desperately needed
