I would guess they might be the line numbers off a depot's route knowledge card. Makes it easy for a computer to check a job against an individual's route knowledge.

Intriguing but what are all those route numbers. Sounds like you have got James Bond and all his mates working out of Manchester.

They're sections of route for the planning department. They appear on the dockets but they are meaningless to train crew.

A temporary fix as they are mixing the Middlesbrough and Newcastle diagrams up, which of course once the new trains come in can’t happen as 68s aren’t going to Newcastle and 802s aren’t going to Middlesbrough.

Who knows? There may be a more permanent fix forthcoming? Still, the temporary fix seems to have worked today at least.

I hear what you are saying, but I suspect TPE never had any serious intention of using the Mk3 stock. I’m not sure what the reliability of Mk3 sets is, but I suspect probably not as high as the current Class 185s, and the route is very intensively used.
Unlike with a homogenous DMU formation, the data's not always publically available to differentiate between the reliability of coaching stock and the locos hauling them, but as of autumn 2016, the most recent data I have to hand until the latest reliability data is released by Modern Railways next month, Greater Anglia's mark 3 rakes were more reliable than TPEs' class 185s: At that time, the Greater Anglia mark 3 sets were achieving 48,122 Miles per Technical Incident (Fault causing a delay of three minutes or more), while the class 185s were achieving 23,052 Miles per Technical Incident. I note however that both fleets remain the most reliable in their respective groups ('Inter-city' and 'New Generation DMU') two years on, so presumably their current performances will be comparable.

With modern diesel locomotives hauling them and the added redundancy of operating in top and tail formation, there's nothing to say that the mark 3s wouldn't have proven more reliable than the 185s, had they entered service with TPE.

They look a bit goofy, like they built the cab too short for the buffers etc

Once CAF has shorted out the braking problem & tested, there will have to be a training period for driver & conductors. One set has been modified and if is acceptable they will convert the other sets. CAF has managed a fix earlier than first thought. If everything goes okay now the instead of late Spring introduction then it might be early spring but wait and see and be patient.o_O

I think most people's/passengers patience has run out.
The quick build and entry into service is not happening and passengers need a reliable service now, hopefully with a seat at a reasonable price.
The Government/DfT and the franchise management are to blame for the shortcomings.

I'll not hold my breath just yet!

Driver training on class 68's has just started for Scarborough depot, with York depot due to follow after the New Year. That will be complete around March time, although York depot training is being split in half, with the other half dates yet to be confirmed. That will bring the number of TPE drivers trained on class 68 locomotives to around 90. However, all those drivers need another 8 days training on the mk.5 coaches and DT, when they become available to TPE for this. Some of the training can take place in service however. Then there are the guards to train up also.

So however you look at it, it's not going to be a full Mk5a timetable before May 2019.

Today’s update:

New brake valves have cured the sudden stop issue below 8mph.

CAF are happy with this but more testing is required just to be sure, hence the test runs back on in earnest.

Should be some test runs on the North route ‘soon’ to see how the full sets perform over the hills (shouldn’t be any issues with that compared to a 185 either).

Thanks for the update @BMIFlyer.

It was only a matter of time that CAF sorted out a fix to the problem and hopefully the fix works and testing continues.

As for.the rest that's totally understandable.

68032 along with set TP09 was on test this morning, it used the Manchester Depot to Bletchley via Styal line path and used it again on the return, I went to Gatley to catch the testing, only just made it, as by this point it was some 30 to 40 minutes early!

Mike the fact that you're able to see a lot of these runs when most of us are chained to our desks at work makes for superb reading!
