Got an advanved ticket from Bolton to Windermere via PRE with specific train; can I catch this train when it calls at Horwich or would that invalidate the ticket?
Thanks!

What's your itinerary?
Which trains do you have reservations for?

You must travel on the services you have been given reservations for (even if that's Coach * Seat **, or "No specific seat reserved"). For all other legs of the journey you should use unreservable services.

As long as you comply with those two principles (excepting disruption which prevents you from doing so), you're fine.

1322 today from Bolton on Northern, Calls at Horwich 1329
Ah, I see - you want to start your journey late at Horwich. This is not permitted with any Advance ticket - they uniformly forbid break of journey, which includes starting late. Now, whether or not you would be 'let off' even if your trangression was 'caught' is another question, but if it's possible, I would simply make your journey as per what the ticket states.

OK, ta.
Away from my OP;
I suppose the rule means anyone wanting a cheap Manchester-Euston advance who lives in Stockport whould have to go "back" to Manchester to catch a train that stops in...Stockport!
Mind you, I suppose normally the advance ticket prices would cost no more from Stockport than Manchester (??).

Exactly - ticket prices from Stockport to London will either be the same, or lower than, Manchester to London. There are a limited number of situations in which starting late on an Advance can undercut a fare for a shorter journey, but alas it is not permitted to do this.

It's not an issue to get the bus to Bolton and the rail ticket's only just over a tenner (inc railcard discount) so happy days, as they say.
