Every time I collect tickets that I’ve purchased online I have always received
- The tickets
- A collection receipt.

Today (unfortunately) I chose to collect my tickets from one of the new London Overground machines

Now these machines are excellent- they are easy to use and also offer tickets from another station, and most rovers and rangers too I think. Very useful.

However, they do not provide a collection receipt. They don’t even provide a button to press to request one (I can see that perhaps not everyone is going to want this)

I find these receipts really useful because they act as the confirmation I can use for being reimbursed and it avoids the discussion about ‘can I keep my ticket’ when staff really want you to use the gates.

A collection receipt is pretty standard stuff at the cinema theatre etc etc and is still offered on other rail machines.

Does anyone know if this is a new policy and whether this is set by the retailer or the dispensing station.

I have noticed that machines operated by LNER have stopped issuing collection receipts in recent weeks.

My current employers are happy to reimburse on the basis of my order confirmation/receipt emailed at the time of booking.

If you really need to keep the tickets I have never been refused if I have asked at the manned gateline. Although I am aware others have. A train company cannot refuse to allow you to keep the ticket though if you need it for delay repay purposes and it is for customer services/the TOC delay repay team to verify any delay and not the staff at the station. From memory, I think this might even be stated in either the NRCoT or former NRCoC about being entitled to keep your ticket for delay repay/ delay compensation purposes.

I like a collection receipt as if your return portion fails to drop the collection receipt often pushes it out.

Southeastern machines give a receipt for TOD collection. But if you're buying from the machine, you don't get a receipt despite the on-screen message telling you that you will - however, you can press the "print additional receipt" button to get one! This is, apparently, just how Southeastern specified it, which makes them look really stupid. I've tried complaining to their Twitter team but, as usual, end up losing the will to live.

Good. I hate the collection receipts. Would be glad to see the back of them!

Yep another vote here for the end of collection receipts! Just an extra piece of card to juggle until I can dispose of it!

Each to their own, I can understand why some people find them pesky, but I find them a very useful cross check on my expenses and I was a bit annoyed the other day when one didn't appear when I was printing at an LNER machine. Good to hear that they're coming back.

It's the ones printed 'VOID VOID VOID' that make me smile, what's that all about?!

If the ticket machine detects an error in the printing process, it sends a signal that it is unable to print the current order successfully, then overprints any tickets which have left the ticket stack but not yet reached the collection tray with 'VOID VOID VOID'.

Should be optional & if required printed first. We have lots left in the machine & scattered over the floor. Often the next customer is confused as they think it relates to their transaction.

Collection receipts are extremely useful for expenses purposes on many journeys.

I vote for optional but printed last due to the reason stated above relating to unreliability of machines.

Collection Receipts are really handy for expenses. Although they don't detail what tickets you bought or who from, they often (usually?) show the total cost of the tickets, and its on orange stock which looks more harder to forge than a PDF or email receipt (this is how payroll departments think...)

I'm fine with them being optional, but the button should stay on the screen long enough to have a chance of pressing it!

I would have thought that collection recipts were an easy way to fiddle expenses and because of this I am surprised companies accept them.

EMT operate a variation on this. Receipt for TOD collection. No receipt if buying, unless you press "Print Receipt" which results in TWO being printed !

If the ToD machine is out of order at my local (TfW) station, the counter staff will print tickets off. However they don't hand over the receipt but keep it themselves. The other day I asked about this, and whether I should be given it as well as my tickets, and they said no, they need to retain it. I didn't argue as I don't particularly need them, but thought it was a strange policy and couldn't see any reason for it.

Agreed, they are a waste of paper. Your purchase receipt if you need it to claim expenses is the e-mail sent to you when you booked, and any company who doesn't accept that needs a firm whack round the head with the 21st century.

Sorry, you've lost me there. As I am not in the position of needing to claim expenses I am not au fait with the various means of doing so!
Almost all browsers will permit you to print a particular page to a PDF file, rather than to a printer. A PDF file can then be attached to the expenses claim in the same way an image can.

Haha, I left work 15 years ago, and the only expenses I was involved with were my bosses', but I know there used to be a lot of small bits of paper stapled to a covering sheet. I appreciate time has moved on... .

I'm shocked that any Collection receipt is sufficient for expenses given that it doesn't actually show anything of use other than the price of some unknown tickets that were collected on a certain date at a certain station.

Though that's the same 21st Century that has all sorts of tools to hand that enable fairly easy forgery of electronic documents.

Ultimately though when it comes to expenses, companies need sensible rules and also a degree of trust in their employees. And employees need to avoid taking the proverbial!
