Question - Can I buy my son a railcard discounted ticket if he travels with me on a journey that's already covered for me by a Season Ticket?

Yes you can't do it

A Customer may present both a Family & Friends Railcard and an Annual Season Ticket and purchase a Child’s discounted price ticket if the journey is over the route covered by the Season ticket. The customer would therefore use their Annual Season Ticket for travel on this journey. Should the customer’s journey deviate from the route of their Annual Season Ticket, further tickets should be purchased for the adult and child as usual.

If a customer shows a Season Ticket valid for less than one year, the customer cannot use their Season Ticket for the journey. The customer must buy both a discounted priced ticket for their use and for a child or children.

If an adult is travelling with a child who has a valid Season Ticket for the journey concerned, the adult fare is still eligible for the Family & Friends Railcard discount. Should the customer’s journey deviate from the route of the child’s Season Ticket, further tickets should be purchased for the adult and child as usual.

I don't doubt your information - is it in the public domain anywhere as it's certainly not in the FFRC T&Cs online.

Maybe because it's one of the benefits to Annual ticket holders rather than to FFRC holders? As you say, seasons in general do not qualify.

This advice is incorrect. By buying "both a discounted priced ticket for their use and for a child", the customer will be charged 81% of the adult price, 66% for the adult and 19% for the child.

Alternatively, the customer may travel on their season ticket and the child may buy a ticket at the child rate, costing 50% of the adult fare.

That is taking pedantry to a new level, given that the information clearly refers to using a F&F railcard.

If there were 4 children that would cost 146% of the adult fare, rather than 200% on child tickets. With 3 it'd be 126% vs 150%. With 2, two child fares are cheaper.

What it should do is be appended with "or a regular Child ticket without Railcard discount, if cheaper".

Or just allow it for all Season Tickets, as it's quite petty not to in a way.

I don't see where the restriction on all passengers having to use F&F Railcard discounted tickets is spelled out in the Railcard conditions. They are indeed remarkably concise, and make no mention of any such restriction - and of relevance, only that the group must travel together and that the minimum child fare is £1.00.

The bigger issue is, I suspect, finding a retailer that will sell you a child F&F-discounted fare on its own.

Surely a ticket office should be able to do this, they managed to sell me 11 groupsave tickets in one transaction, when the maximum is 9?
