I’m looking at going here got a question the hotels near the station are expensive is worth staying at the university area which is cheaper? I have an early train to catch at 7ish in the morning so not sure how early trams run and if they are easy to navigate?

I’d recommend staying somewhere out from the centre. Switzerland is a expensive & Zurich even more so!

What is the next stop on the train after Zürich HB? It will almost certainly be cheaper and you can get up later!

Whilst it may not be the most convenient option in this case, I can recommend staying in Winterthur rather than Zürich - 20-25 minutes away by train but a lot cheaper and a pleasant city in its own right.

Walhalla hotel is ideal stopover for an early train. I used it in the peak of the summer before getting a Milan train the next morning. Good and not too expensive.

Could do worse than check out the Ibis budget at Zürich City West Tram no.4 stops right outside the door or Hardbrücke station (numerous S bahn services) a short walk away. There is an Ibis and Novotel in the same block if you want something a bit more upmarket as well.

I stayed there in the summer. It's basic as you'd expect but fine to stay in plus easy to get to the station.

I stayed here a number of years ago and it was reasonably priced for a centrally located hotel and virtually next door to Zurich Hbf

Booking.com is your friend (other similar sites are available). Hotels in Zürich are generally expensive, those outside the main station particularly so, but you can generally get "reasonable for Switzerland" prices within a few stops on the train or tram networks. Depending on your validity, check out places such as Winterthur as well.

There are a quite a few small hotels in the Old Town (Altstadt) of Zuerich which can be suprisingly good value - particularly on Zaehringerstrasse. It is just a short walk to the Hbf over the Banhofbruecke so it is very convenient for an early train.

Another thing worth considering is a private room at a hostel.

Agreed, I went there last May and stayed at Richterswil youth hostel. I got a private room for £162 for three nights - no en-suite facilities, not even a washbasin, but it had a writing desk and a lockable wardrobe.

Richterswil youth hostel is right by the station, next to the platform where you arrive when you are coming from Zurich. It's about a 30-minute journey by S-Bahn from Zurich main station, and it's right on the shore of Lake Zurich.

There is also a youth hostel in Zurich city centre. Go to the Hostelling International page on the YHA website at https://www.yha.org.uk/places-to-stay/hostelling-international and select Switzerland and Zurich, and it will come up with both the Zurich and the Richterswil hostel.

In terms of eating establishments in Zurich, the "Bona Dea" vegetarian restaurant in Zurich main station is worth a mention - even if you're not vegetarian or vegan but are happy to try vegetarian food. They do a self service buffet for CHF 29 for one plate full of food. You can even book a table via their website (which only appears to be in German). See www.bona-dea.ch

For reasonably priced "sit down" meals I can recommend the in-store restaurants of either the Co-Op or Migros supermarket chains.

There is a pizzeria on Zürich Hbf called Atrio, which is very good and does a deal where you can have a visit to the salad bar for about 7 CHF when ordering a pizza or pasta. Pizzas are about CHF 19 - 26 and pasta dishes about the same. There is also Brasserie Feredal on the opposite side of the concourse, which again does good food and an extensive selection of Swiss beers.

Just a couple of minutes from Zh HB, reasonably priced, giant cordon bleus, familiar. Awesome. :D
