Diesel and electric locomotive building was in full swing with British Railways workshops at Darlington and Derby building class 25’s and Swindon and Crewe building class 52 Westerns. Locomotive contractors were also in production with English Electric building at Vulcan Foundry and also at the Robert Stephensons and Hawthorn works, Darlington class 37’s, Clayton at Derby were building class 17’s, Beyer Peacock building class 35 Hymeks and Brush were building class 47’s at Loughborough.

With the continuing increase in diesel locomotives and the effects of the Beeching Report and the associated line closures December was another all time high for locomotives condemned with three hundred and seven being withdrawn in the month. This would take the number of withdrawn locomotives since the end of the 1963 Summer timetable (four months earlier) to nine hundred and forty five. Locomotives withdrawals in the month were spread over sixty three steam classes and two diesel classes. Major inroads were made in the month into the Great Western 0-6-0PT fleet with sixty locomotives condemned, the LMS Fowler 0-6-0 4F and the WD 2-8-0’s both having with twenty one locomotives condemned and the Great Western Hall 4-6-0’s with eighteen locomotives condemned. Four main line diesels were also condemned, the LMS prototype 10000 and the three Bullied diesels 10201 – 10203. At least three of the December withdrawals escaped being broken up, Great Western 14xx 0-4-2T 1466 (4866), Great Western Hall 4-6-0 4965 (4983) and Great Western Castle 4-6-0 5029.

As an apprentice at Shildon on a number of occasions I went to North Road worshops and Green St shed to do essential maintenance . It was sad to see the workshops so empty. I remember removing all the catering equipment from Green St and installing it at Shildon. I think it must have been about 1967/8. I wish I'd had a camera.

With first generation diesel locomotive building virtually complete this month would see the last two Class 50 locomotives delivered. This was the end of locomotive construction for the first time in the railways history and gap would last four years until the Class 87’s were built in 1973/74

Class 50 – D448/49

The next nine years or so will be dominated by a mix of locomotive modifications and the withdrawal of the more un-successful or “non standard” types. The main programme of modification this month was Doncaster Works undertaking replacement of the unreliable Mirrlees JVS12T 1250bhp engine in the Brush Type 2 fleet with a 1470bhp English Electric 12SVT engine.

With the main line steam now all withdrawn attention now focused on the small or non-standard diesel shunter and the non standard or unreliable main line diesel fleets. Shunter condemnations increased from ten to thirty one and main line diesel condemnations increased from seven to nineteen.. Condemned this month were one Class 14, two Class 15’s, eight Class 17 Clayton type 1’s, three North British Class 22’s and two Class 23 (Baby Deltics). Also condemned was one of the Southern DC Electrics (Class 70).

Excellent photos as ever. I don't think I've said it before but I always look forward to these posts.

Anyway, this one has made me realise that I don't think I really know what 'stored' actually means. What's brought this on is that I saw (and photographed) 20302/03 on Saturday in almost exactly the same position as in the photo above in York on Saturday where I often see other locos stabled. I'd always imagined that stored locomotives were stuck away in a shed or some far end of a yard, perhaps with a tarpaulin or something over them, but clearly out of use. So what's the difference between 'stored' and simply 'stabled'?

Sixty years ago the last 9F 2-10-0 Standard class steam locomotives were still in production, diesel shunter production was in full swing as was delivery of the Pilot Scheme mainline locomotives. There was also a steady flow of new diesel multiple units.

In the month one hundred and six steam locomotives were withdrawn, forty two being over fifty years old with Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway 23 Class 0-6-0ST 51313 being the oldest, having entering traffic in March 1877 and condemned eighty one years later. The majority of these withdrawals were the older secondary main line and branch line passenger engines, steam shunting engines and older freight engines being displaced by the continued delivery of the last of the 9F standards, the pilot scheme main line diesels, diesel multiple units and diesel shunting engines. Thirty five engines condemned were built post the 1923 grouping with the youngest engine condemned being Great Western Railway 0-6-0PT 3740 at only twenty one years old.

So what's the difference between 'stored' and simply 'stabled'?

Stabled locos are basically on a break between duties whereas stored locos are technically out of use for whatever reason.

For instance, there's 67s which are allocated to storage and haven't been used in years whereas the thunderbird locos are in use, just not doing much.

Alexander bodied Volvo Olympian S767 SVU of Chepstow Classic Bus seen in Camborne on 15th January 2019. Not sure if it had broken down.
