Unless there's a steam special running, nearest heritage is the Harz system and that's a long way for a day trip!
Given decent weather and a prompt start because of daylight hours, a Schleswig-Holstein Ticket would allow you to go up to Rendsburg across the Kiel Canal bridge, then up to Schleswig for a large cathedral in a small old town, across to the Westerland Line at Husum and back over the other big canal bridge.

I don't know any heritage lines around there (there may well be some, I just don't know them :) ) but you could grab yourself an HVV day ticket and go for a ride round the AKN lines to the North which are through quite pleasant (if flat) countryside and have a rather different feel from the city.

Ah, I forgot a ride over the Hochbruecke - that's also well worth it.

Incorrect. The Mollibahn at Bad Doberan is closer but still 115 miles by road. Wernigerode on the Harz is 163 miles.

walking thru the Alte Elbe Tunel is interesting, and the two Falk Towers (St Pauli, which you can go in, and Wilhelmsburg, which you can't)

I'd be tempted to try to catch (not literally) some of the freight in the region ... there must be shedloads out of the docks ... maybes on the Hamburg avoiding line (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Güterumgehungsbahn_Hamburg). There's a few youtube vids to give you a taste.

Alternatively, a couple of hours with a Schleswig-Holstein rail ticket would get you to Bremerhaven and the German Maritime Museum which is supposed to be good (https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Attra...views-German_Maritime_Museum-Bremerhaven.html). Always wanted to go and hopeful that I'll manage it in the summer. However at the mo, the museum is being renovated and it's pot luck how much of it is open (although on the positive side, the entrance cost is as much as you feel like paying). I'm fairly sure that I read that access to the ships and U-boat outside isn't affected though.

Good point. It's also slightly quicker and rather cheaper by rail, and Molli is quite a lot cheaper - but the Brocken in snow might be fun!

Niedersachsen Ticket for that one :)

You are , of course , quite right ; my only excuse being that after planning a trip in the summer this week, you could sell me a 'Quer durch Schleswig-Sachsen' ticket. :)

Luckily, no one here knows that I used to acutally live in Niedersachsen and so further embarrassment over my mistake is spared.

Worth going over to Copenhagen on the Train-Ferry? Quite a rare experience!

Hamburg Harburg is a incredibly busy place for Freight and a short loco hauled ride out of Hamburg HBF.

Miniature Wunderland is worth a visit for all the model railway fans(in fact it has everything in miniature, very popular).

Thanks for the replies. Miniature Wunderland and beer is our main reason for going. We are thinking of doing the Molli railway I think.

Use a Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Ticket rather than the slightly pricier Schleswig-Holstein Ticket which has virtually the same validity. Regional trains only, but the connections work well enough. One way via Lübeck und Wismar, the other via Rostock and Schwerin (all of which are lovely, but you won't have time!)

An different side trip could be on the Metronom to Uelzen, the unusual 1990s Bahnhof was designed by Hundertwasser and is quite unlike any other station I've ever seen!
