I need to balance getting cheapest tickets against journey time here as returning same day. However if I can find a decent deal on a hotel me and my friend will split the cost and return next day. Disabled Person's Railcard held.

I notice the lower tier TPE advance tickets sell out fast. I notice there are cheap Northern Advances between Liverpool - Manchester and then Manchester to Leeds. However, would this be a long journey time between Manchester and Leeds?

Can anyone do any better?

The other, perhaps most cheaper option, would be the National Express Shuttle between Liverpool and Leeds. I think the journey time is just under 2 hours. I have not had chance to check their fares yet but I remember they used to do cheap fun fares.

Northern between Manchester Victoria and Leeds take 85-95mins (TPE take around 50mins).
Having checked a random date, National Express were £5 each way (without a coachcard).

NX is prob best bet then. I checked TPE Advances with their current sale and it was fairly good value so have that too.

Depends when your travelling, i'd avoid National Express in the peaks, here's the NEX timetable
https://www.nxagents.com/theguide/060/CGR060 (11 January 2019).pdf

Annoyingly it's one of those rarities were it's cheaper to have a through ticket than split, looking at split tickets, with a disabled railcard, off peak it's, £10.70 Liverpool-Manchester & £15.45 Manchester-Leeds were as a through Liverpool-Leeds off peak ticket is £24.30.

Looking at same day off peak return is not much cheaper, with railcard, £9.70 Liverpool-Manchester, & £11.55 Manchester-Leeds, Manchester-Leeds is Northern only, no CDRs Manchester-Leeds on TPE, the fare is still £15.45.

Here's one outside the box though, Liverpool-Leeds splitting at Preston, Liverpool-Preston, £9.55, Preston-Leeds £12.40 both off peak day returns with disabled railcard.

For the Calder Valley route, the combination of a Lancashire Day Ranger (£16.15) and a Hebden Bridge to Leeds CDR (£5.00) is marginally cheaper than at £21.15.

The ranger is also slightly less restrictive time wise than a Liverpool to Manchester CDR in that it allows travel from 08:45 (vs 09:30).

Now 09:00 for the Lancashire Day Ranger, http://www.brfares.com/#roverdetail?nlc=I065&rvr=LDR , a lot of similar tickets (Cheshire Day Ranger for me, also now 09:00 rather than 08:45) had their start times put back in the recent fares update.

Check your trains performance too at recenttraintimes - TPE's on time performance can be so shockingly poor the real journey time experienced may make the difference between them and Northern irrelevant.
