I usually book coach J seat 8 (northbound) and 11 (southbound) and I have never had anyone sit opposite me.
I don't like to sit in G or H as they are further from the kitchen so the food is either colder or they have run out of some options.

Each to their own but I don't understand why people are so keen to sit on their own all the time. Why limit yourself to a tiny space and tiny table when you are paying for that extra space? I quite enjoy talking to strangers.

Quite. On those occasions when I have upgraded on the ATW / TFW Premier Service I have always enjoyed good conversation across the table and across the aisle, far more so than when in Standard, and it always seems to be spontaneous. Maybe that is because it is always in the evening, and people are looking forward to a good meal on the way home rather than working. The atmosphere is much more “club” than it is in VT, where no-one ever seems to speak to each other.

I'm not too keen on single seats as every other one only gets half a window and you therefore need to twist your neck to see out.

Yeah recall that with the seat in coach H , i do appreciate a view . One small irk i have with single seats or aisle is people walking past yu and feeling more exposed

IMO the Mallard Mk3/4 is far superior to the Pendolino.

I can't agree. Less comfortable seats, more claustrophobic due to the very high seat backs, and (Mk4) ride like a cart. On a few occasions I thought we'd come off the road last time I used one. Mk4s are cheap, nasty rubbish built down to a price.

Regardless of mode there's no more comfortable way to travel in the UK than Pendolino Coach G in my view - LNER trains just don't have the spare capacity to compete with it. I don't waste money on GWR First since the IETs came in.

It's not even worth Weekend First. I sat down, thought briefly, and moved to Standard. The comfort level is about the same as Standard in a Class 350/1 or /3.

Maybe once when it was the IC spec interior but not since the Mallard refit. I look at Pendolinos and say the same thing, cheap, uncomfortable and tacky garbage that's seriously claustrophobic.

Each to their own I suppose.

Not a fan of the leather seats too! Though some like it

I had experience of a leather IC80 (i think?) MK3 RFM, very nice!

I'm sure it was an old IC seat!

I think VTWC 1st is more likely to be used as an extension of the office rather than a social space. Indeed, the whole reason I upgrade to 1st on VTWC when I do is to have space to myself (so always reserve on the 1 side). If I wanted to be sociable I would choose a table in Standard.

The standard class seats have held up well, but the 1st class seats feel as if they have no more padding left in them. Probably because they were a bit plusher than the standard ones, so haven't stood the test of time as well as the harder seats.

Still perfectly nice to sit in for long distances though!

Bays of 2 opposite each other , if travelling alone , how often would you find yourself with someone across from you ?

That depends entirely on:

Route
Day of week
Time of day
Whether you reserve or not (and if so, whether you choose to sit in your designated seat)

In my experience, (usual rules apply re anecdotal evidence) if you are on peak trains, peak direction, you have a good chance of having someone opposite. Sunday after lunch southbound is almost a certainty, as is half term weekends (northbound at start, southbound at end). Scotland trains are usually well patronised, albeit not that much north of Oxenholme. More than once I’ve been standing from Preston heading southbound.

There’s some other factors - if Man U are playing at home, then the half day before the match northbound on that route is likely to be busy in first. There’s a similar effect with a couple of the other big teams, e.g. Liverpool and of course Wolverhampton :D

Birmingham seems to be the best route for getting space in first. I guess because there are so many seats on the route and plenty of alternatives with Chiltern and LNW.

Whenever I have travelled first class on a Pendolino I usually book 1 seat in a bay of two, and I have never had someone sat opposite me. The routes I usually travel on are Birmingham to London, Birmingham to Scotland and London to Scotland

I see , I think Saturday north of Preston is usually quiet and Monday and Tuesday

Whenever I go in 1st I always book J8/11, the train has always been dead. There were a grand total of 7 punters in J on the 18:50 New St-Euston last Friday. It's always wedged in standard.
