I seem to have lost the card I used to book an upcoming journey with LNER.

How can I collect the tickets without it? Would a dimple visit to the local ticket officer do the job?

They've helped me before with this - but my advice is to phone them with as much notice as you can and they can set the tickets to be collected with any card - I needed to ask twice before it was actually actioned. Ticket offices are not supposed to print them out without the card unless this is set.

Try using any other debit or credit card in the same name in the machine. It should allow you to collect as the machine only checks the name not the card number.

Excellent, thanks for the information.

LNER collections don't work for me if I use the wrong card (still mine).

Unfortunately this is complete rubbish. Suggest the OP ignores this. Best advice is to contact LNER customer service and I am sure they will help.

Sorry, I should have asked: from where did you buy the ticket. I could read your post as being that you are travelling with LNER, but bought elsewhere. It's the retailer you need to contact in any event, and I am sure they will help. It's a common occurrence.

It was purchased from the LNER website.

Is that only the LNER TVMs as I know the GTR ones don't bother as you can put in any card to collect tickets as the card doesn't need to be in the same name as the ticket holder.

I know this from past experience however when I tried it recently at a GTR station using the card I paid for the tickets to collect them at the TVM, the TVM threw a wobbly and I had to collect them from a miserable and grumpy member of TL staff who proceeded to have a go at me as the system didn't come up with my details such as buyer name etc....

Bearing in mind Virgin Trains never gave me this hassle.

That isn't down to the TVM, it's down to the seller. You can ensure it by paying by PayPal as they then don't know a card number to tie it to.

The collection status flag is set by the retailer not the TVM operator.

It isn't any, never mind the LNER ones, as it's simply incorrect.
When you buy a ticket, the retailing site can either set collection to be "any card" or "same card". This is then recorded in the ToD database (actually called Live Sales Management). TVMs are dumb beasts and simply follow this requirement, set by the retailer, for the collection in question. Staff at ticket offices can override this; they need (understandably) more info to do so, which should in the ToD database, having been provided by the retailer. Hence you were asked some questions.

On Virgin if you don't have the card on you but know the last 4 digits they will normally print off the tickets for you.

How quaint you believe the machine reads the mag stripe

They certainly used to at the time when TOD was designed. This being the case, it can't be based on name (and it isn't). It's based on the card number.

It seems from a bit of Googling that chip cards *can* reveal the name but the standard doesn't require them to so it could not be relied on.

Just some feedback, I called today where the web team simply changed the details over to another card, the last four digits is all they needed.

They did say It may take a few hours, I'll try a local TVM tomorrow.

The only small annoyance was the number of recorded information messages I had to listen too before actually getting through to them.

Thanks to all who responded.

Is it generally now not possible to collect tickets from the ticket office without the required card if you've not contacted customer service first? It's been a few years since I had to do this but I never had a problem if I went up to the desk.
