Art Deco Tube Excursions
London Transport Museum is offering two tours by 1938 tube stock train on Sunday 24 February.

Join fellow travellers on a rare opportunity to travel on the beautifully restored art-deco 1938 train, along the District, Circle, Metropolitan and Piccadilly Lines. This will be one of the last heritage runs on this route due to signalling upgrades on the Circle Line. There are two specially extended, non-stopping trips travelling through central London and (for Journey 2) out into the rolling Buckinghamshire countryside for a taste of suburbia.

The first trip will depart from Ealing Broadway at 10.11 and operate via HIgh Street Kensington and a full circuit of the Circle Line to terminate at Moorgate at 12.07.

The second trip will leave Moorgate at 13.11 and run to Amersham, returning via Rayners Lane to Ealing Broadway (arrive 15.23).

Tickets are expected go on sale this coming Wednesday (23) (weblink above) and on the Museum telephone information line: 020 7565 7298. The cost is £30; Concessions and Children £25. Please note these journeys are not suitable for those under the age of 11, due to their length.

The first one - Ealing Broadway to Moorgate - is less than two hours. Then its probably an hour-ish to Amersham, and say another hour back from Amersham to Ealing Broadway.

I can't see any timings, other than the outline journey information shown in post #1.

Not sure what the point you're making is?

Although sold out, this website suggests there is 1938 stock outing in February on a Art Deco train trip from Ealing Broadway

BLUEGOBLIN7 - I thought what I was saying was quite simple so I am sorry if it has confused you.

By way of explanation and starting at the beginning, see Post 61. The OP has told us about the 1938 stock tours, and copied and pasted the content of the link to the LT Museum website, which clearly shows the routes of both the morning and afternoon excursions, with their starting locations and departure times, and their finishing points and associated arrival times.

In post 62. The poster has commented that they look like long journeys without any toilet facilities, so I replied (post 63) by saying "The first one - Ealing Broadway to Moorgate - is less than two hours. Then its probably an hour-ish to Amersham, and say another hour back from Amersham to Ealing Broadway", meaning that its not too long a period with no toilet break, particularly on the afternoon trip. (I suspect that the afternoon trip will probably stop at Amersham and that there will be time for a toilet break there -- but I don't know as I haven't seen any detailed timings or stopping points anywhere, if indeed there are going to be any stopping points in the course of either journey, and I was guessing the Moorgate - Amersham and Amersham - Ealing journey times as I han't come across any detailed timings for the individual legs).

So....In post 65 I said, " I can't see any timings, other than the outline journey information shown in post 1 (although I meant the post on the top of the page), and as you referred me back to where I had started from I responded "Exactly"..... i e agreeing with you that there was journey information at the top of the page....which I had used when posting post 63.

If it was my referring to post 61 as post 1, then please accept my apologies.

Sorry, I was confused too, as your post 63 reads that you were estimating the times of the second trip, hence my initial reply to you.

The LT Museum advice about long trips suggests no alighting will be permitted at Amersham.

Well I don't think that I've come out of this smelling of roses, as although I read post 61 and got the timings from there, I managed to miss the warning about not taking children as they are long trips, etc.. I just automatically assumed that the trains would stop somewhere along the route, but thinking about it further, to do so could possibly confuse members of the public --- and even if there was a stop along the way, it doesn't necessarily follow that there would be convenient toilets nearby.

Stops would be impossible for two reasons:

  • '38TS is too low for non-compromise-height SSR platforms
  • There are no convenient berths for an extended dwell to avoid blocking the regular service — until Moorgate's bay, that is

Stops were made and passengers alighted at Amersham and Harrow-on-the-Hill during the rail tour on 9 September 2018

More so than the Central Line platforms towards Epping?

Tube stock used to run into standard height platforms when the Bakerloo line ran to Watford Junction and presumably still does between Queens Park and Harrow and Wealdstone.

Those are the 'compromise height' platforms.

Are the Moorgate bay platforms which the stock will park in the same height as those at Amersham

If so whats wrong with pax alighting there? otherwise it is a bit of a stupid reason.

This will be one of the last heritage runs on this route due to signalling upgrades on the Circle Line.

There is also a near-completed restoration of a Q Stock from LTM which will run on the District's 150th anniversary, but would it have the necessary technological signalling equipment to run a railtour?

The restoration is neither near-completed, to any sort of standard to operate on the LU network, nor receiving CBTC signalling equipment.

Any chance of a static exhibit? Even if only a few individual cars? Perhaps at Ealing Broadway or a little used side platform at another District Line station?

As with the Chesham Set which was put on display at Rickmansworth during 'Steam On The Met' in 2000, the extra publicity could help with fundraising to complete its restoration.

Significant work would be required to allow the set to even be hauled on the LU Network. Following the high-profile incident involving the 1960TS Cravens unit in 2014 it is doubtful that this would be forthcoming.

The network has changed significantly since 2000, with a continuing tightening up of regulations to ensure a safe and reliable railway. The network is also far, far busier, leaving much less space for anything other than the core service. There is no such thing as a 'little used side platform' - it is not uncommon for all platforms at Ealing Broadway to be in use, and it is extremely helpful to have that wiggle room available in the event of disruption. Considering that a heritage service will also be loading and unloading and sitting at Ealing for a period of time, you're now down to one platform to run the service from. Which is ludicrous.

Rickmansworth's former bay platform is, in 2019 terms, comparable only with Chalfont & Latimer. The idea is a complete non-starter (and the costs involved would far outweigh any donations anyway).

I wonder whether the reversing movement will use the pocket siding, or the trailing crossover on the Piccadilly branch.

It will reverse off the platform and use the crossover, which is a colour-light signal moved.

Passenger-carrying trains are not permitted to use shunt moves on LUL without additional mitigations.

I made a short YouTube of this train in action on 24th February. I filmed at Baker Street, Moorgate (during the lunch break with S stock trains passing by), Kings Cross St Pancras and the end of the journey at Ealing Common.

The Next Tour With This Train

This will be on Sunday 17th March 2019 and include a trip to the eastern District Line extremity at Upminster. Exact timings are unknown - tickets will be on sale 'soon'... please see the LT Museum link in the quote above.
