Lucky I had them yesterday and even better 43002 was on the front working out of Paddington.
I paid for a First Class ride between Cardiff and Newport so I could get a ride right behind 43002, as it was leading the service to Paddington. It was a sad day for me, saying a final goodbye to the pioneer of such an iconic train thats been part of my life for over 40 years, back when I was a small boy. It is so sad to see the HST vanish from the GWML.

43160 with set LA63 and 43002 having a set swap at Paddington after arriving with 1A89. They should now work 1C26 18:30 Paddington to Weston-super-Mare then 2M70 21:34 Weston-super-Mare to Bristol Temple Meads.

For those interested in the colour of a locomotive ( ;) ), I've just observed 43185 (and 43097) on 1A75, 05:40 Plymouth-Paddington. This puts them on diagram IW4 today so they should work the following later:
10:03 Padd-Penzance
15:52 Penzance-Padd
22:32 Padd-Temple Meads

185 declared a failure at Paddington before working the 10:03 PZ. Train has just departed 10-late with just 097 powering, at the front of the train.

43185 was at the rear of 1P31 1209 HEREFORD to LONDON PADDINGTON this afternoon, sorry this message is too late for anyone intending to photograph it today. At least there was no serious problem with 43185 after being declared a failure the other day! The stock appears to form 5C91 then 1C91 London Paddington to Paignton.

I doubt it was that serious it just wouldn't start up at Paddington.

The exam is going ahead..... .
Absolutely nuts. With such a huge surplus of vehicles, how are they justifying such a large expenditure? Or is someone other than GWR paying (DfT or Hitachi)?

Would they NRM pay for it. Sounds stupid if they were.

As mentioned in various places so won't be going over the debate yet again, its lease commitment.
If you stop the power car before it needs the exam - they're mileage based in this case - then there is no commitment under the lease.

Only if you are a cretinous, clueless organisation do you do the exam when you have such a fleet surplus. That or someone else is paying.

Laira have done all E, F and G exams for Great Western power cars for the last 25 years or so.

Yes but these exams have a habit of taking 6 months (look at 43162 out since last june and only just back) can't see it returning as a GWR power car before the may finish.

What does an E Exam entail then?

Email exam? Presume that is auto-correct for E exam.

Includes all wok from lower level exams, plus a number of additional items. Not got the exact spec to hand, but the major item is fitting of overhauled bogies.

Love to see the business case that justifies spending well over £100k on a major exam for something that will in all likelihood be stuffed and mounted in a museum.

Maybe GWR are planning something for the last day, and feel that they can make £100,000 if 43002 is featured?
