I arrive at NRW tomorrow for a couple of days 37 Bashing, although I do not have a great deal of knowledge about the station I will post back my findings on Friday.

I don't think it's open yet!

If you're wanting a quick pint the Complete Angler is just over the bridge about 1 minute from the station. Further down is the Prince of Wales but It's shut, although Greene King still seem to think it's open on their website (but you didn't want to go there, trust me).

LOL
The Planning Application was lodged 11th January, so certainly not open yet!
This is the location/indicative layout from the application and it will be in what was the Doddle unit.

As mentioned upthread The Coach and Horses some 400 yards up Thorpe Road on the left side might prove the best local. They brew their own range of beers on site as Chalk Hill Brewery.
http://chalk-hillbrewery.co.uk/
NORWICH'S LONGEST RUNNING INDEPENDENT BREWERY
Chalk Hill Brewery was formed in 1993, and is now the longest running independent brewery in Norwich.
The brewery is a custom built 15 barrel plant and brews a selection of eight real ales. We supply our beer to local pubs including The Coach And Horses which is on the same site as the brewery, and The Alexandra Tavern on Stafford Street. ......

Still 10% on most items. Shame they halved it from its previous very generous discount.

There was a thread on here where people who had applied for a Bite card complained that they never heard anyranyt back, making it seem like a quiet withdrawal.

Not sure if it's still the case.

Still an empty shell. It's next to the customer piano on the concourse.

I think they sometimes do Old Speckled Hen, which (if you'll pardon the pun) tastes foul.

Speckled Hen used to be a cracking beer but it went rapidly downhill when it was bought by Greene King.

It will be good to have another drinking option in the vicinity of Norwich station. I go there 2-3 times a year and inevitably find myself in a pub having just missed a train. The Coach and Horses is the best in the area (as long as it isn't match day) though the Compleat Angler isn't too bad despite it being Greene King.

I think its just a bit too strong for my taste.

I think I once made the mistake of popping into the Prince of Wales. I'm not sorry to hear of its closure.

For such a grand city as Norwich with plenty of fine drinking establishments, Prince of Wales Road with its endless takeaways and dodgy looking late night bars really is a depressing gateway from the railway station to the city centre

Yes, this is the impression I've had upon entering the City.

Hear that so many times & yes the PoW PH was dreadful. However perfect for a certain local derby football club as welcomed away teams. CityCouncil has plans to upgrade the road but nowt concrete just yet.

Indeed, although during the day you can walk along the river and up through the Cathedral grounds. A far nicer walk.

I hear that so many times that I regret that I never did get the chance to try a Morland Old Speckled Hen.

Fortunately the annual Norwich City of Ale event has taught me a few ideas of where to go for a pint there. Not too many options near the station though.

The Murderers is my favourite pub in the city centre but there are plenty of other choices. Norwich is one of the best cities for a random beer wander.

I'd do anything for a works canteen in the middle lof Leeds, selling sausage, chips and beans for £3.50.
Take the southern exit and head for The David Street Cafe on Water Lane. Forced to relocate round the corner over 10 years ago from the original (larger) David Street location as part of The Holbeck Urban Village/Round Foundry regeneration, but still a proper old school cafe.

While looking for something else on the Norwich City Council Planning Portal, I found this application for a new bar inside Norwich station.

Link: https://planning.norwich.gov.uk/onl...ils.do?activeTab=summary&keyVal=PL5UXULX0HQ00

This would be located in the vacant retail unit that has been disused since the Doddle parcel collection point closed. I had long hoped that the terrible Pumpkin Cafe at NRW would give way to a proper pub (similar to the Sheffield Tap), since that space has beautiful big windows and good high ceilings. Unfortunately (in my humble opinion) it was recently converted into an M&S Simply Food franchisee, which kind of duplicates the East of England CoOp already in the station.

The bar will be operated by SSP, which doesn't bode well, and well be branded 'Beer House'.

This article in the Norwich Evening News provides some more details... https://www.eveningnews24.co.uk/news/business/the-beer-house-pub-norwich-station-1-5856911

I have been down the Norwich area for the 37s for a day or two this week, no sign of the pub yet but plenty of eateries, be careful with the prices though, some outlets are 100% more expensive than others.

Great to know, thanks. I remember the first time I drank it. Was on a go steady session so thought I would drink the mild. After three I asked, just what is the OG?
Became a regular pub and a regular drink for many years.
I must get back for one!
Cheers :)

If you like mild try their Black Anna milk stout. Only 4.0% but very tasty, and a reasonable (these days) £3.60.

For all the football fan haters, have to say there was a really good atmosphere in the Coach and Horses before today’s Norwich v Sheffield United game. Both sets of supporters chatting amicably, drinking out of proper glasses rather than plastic, just how it should be.

Meanwhile back at Norwich station, it will be a while before the pub there opens.

The Coach is such a superb hostelry. Everything about it is just proper.

That's a well managed pub that tends to attract a more mature crowd though.

There's a few pubs that are a bit more lively when the football is on!
