The DfT have published a consultation on closing Angel Road station once the nearby new Meridian Water station opens in May 2019.

https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/angel-road-rail-station-closure-may-2019
Consultation description
Consultation proposing closure of Angel Road rail station in May 2019 when Meridian Water rail station opens. Meridian Water is being built to better serve local passenger demand. We consider maintaining both stations would:

  • reduce track capacity
  • increase journey times along the West Anglia Main Line
  • increase operating costs
By closing Angel Road rail station, Network Rail will be better able to:

  • focus rail industry resources on improving the passenger rail service
  • support regeneration of the surrounding area

It seems silly to require the full closure procedure when a replacement has been built in the vicinity.

One imagines that both regular users won’t mind to much, seeing as Meridian Water will be easier to get to.
Hmm, from what I can see it will be more difficult to get to for the majority of the local users for whom Angel Road is currently relatively convenient. The document makes much of the walk along Conduit Lane to get to the current entrance. Yes, it isn't a very pleasant road to walk along in rush hour traffic, but the document indicates the initial entrance to the new station will be be opposite Tesco/Ikea, which requires a much longer walk along Conduit Lane for those intending passengers coming from the western part of Angel Road's current catchment area, i.e. roughly between Craig Park and Montagu Road.

Two points:
  • The previous access to Angel Road was from the eponymous viaduct. The relocation to Conduit Lane came about when the road was upgraded in the early 90s. So effectively it's almost a reversion to what was in place for 100+ years!
  • Given the current level of service, I suspect anyone wanting to catch a train for most of the day either walks or catches a bus to one of Edmonton Green, Silver Street or even Tottenham Hale.

Isn't there a different process in Scotland for when a station is relocated within a distance, i.e. Forres?

Good point - it is true that the processes can differ up there (I've obviously been down here too long ;) ), though I'm not sure what happened in this case.

At least they are doing it, though, rather than being silly and keeping it with a Parliamentary type service.

Parliamentary service would be especially daft in this case - the extremities of the platforms are literally only within a few metres of touching each other!

I still reccommend visiting Angel Road station while you still can to experience how truly terrible it is. Daylight visits advised only.

My last daylight visit was bad enough!

I recall one dark evening way past midnight, I parked up next to a burnt out car near Conduit Lane and walked on the flyover to Angel Road. With trepidation I descended not knowing if anyone would be down there. Fortunately, it was deserted and the further I walked down, the more I noticed the large towers of central London all lit giving the impression that this station was the entrance to Blade Runner.

Very interesting. That would have been a good point for the consultation document to have made.

Yes, correct, in my experience. A few years ago (but after the major reduction in services calling at Angel Road) I lived about equi-distant from Angel Road, Silver Street and Edmonton Green. For most of the day I'd use Silver Street but Edmonton Green was handy in the peaks because it had additional semi-fast services. But I sometimes used the 09:52 from Angel Road to get to Stratford from where I'd take the DLR to Lewisham, which was handy for where I worked at the time. There were usually a couple of other passengers boarding the 09:52 as well. The afternoon services were also quite useful for going shopping at Stratford.

There was a full Private Bill process in the Scottish Parliament for Airdrie - Bathgate. From memory the station relocation was approved in the Bill process itself.

deeply unsurprising news, simply a formality to be concluded.

Would it be different if the two stations had the same names - like the move at Eltham?

Eltham did involve a closure though, with one new station replacing the two old ones

As an aside when St Pancras Thameslink replaced Kings Cross Thameslink, did they have to do the formal closure notice for the latter? That's a far greater distance than the Angel Road proposal

Yes they did, although it was applied for some years before the current closure procedures came into force, so they used the 1993 Act provisions.
Google finds the London Travelwatch correspondence on the subject:

The Dft have announced that they agree to the closure of Angel Road station with effect from May 2019. The decision has to be ratified by ORR.

https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/angel-road-rail-station-closure-may-2019

This partly deals with suggestions that the new STAR service may not be ready by May 2019. Clearly it may be possible to partially open Meridian Water station and just have existing Angel Road departures transfer across if the third track and associated works are not ready in time. I am slightly surprised that Meridian Water will be completely unmanned. Strikes me as a bit poor really.

"21 responses had a common theme in calling for the footbridge at Angel Road station to be dismantled and re-erected at Pilning station on the Great Western Mainline." :D

So was it people from this forum or from a rival one?

The wires at Pilning are probably higher than at Angel Road so as to comply with latest standards, so even if easily dismantlable the footbridge is unlikely to be high enough.

Must visit Angel Road before it's too late. I imagine its final day will be the busiest it's every been, thus destroying the reason (lack of passengers) why it's famous :D

Imagine if the station got so busy they needed to close it due to overcrowding!
