I made a simple live train departure site for commuters

Hi all,

New to this forum, signed up so I could share something I have been working on. I've had a read of the rules and am pretty sure I am ok to share, but if not, apologies and mods please remove this post.

Recently I was looking for a new project to work on and I discovered the National Rail API. I regularly get the train from Paddington to Hayes & Harlington and one of my biggest issues is that I can never really quickly get the next departures from Paddington to Hayes. I often find myself arriving to the station just minutes before my train is due to depart and I just wanted a simple and quick site where I could see the next departing trains between my stations, what platform it was on, and if it was due on time.

I created a site https://departureboard.io which solves this problem for me. It pulls train departure information direct from the National Rail API, and is live up to date with the in station departure boards. It is not designed to give you millions of pieces of information, but just a really quick, and simple interface to see the next departures between any two stations.

You can also add your routes to your home screen on iOS and Android which is the most useful feature and I think this tool is great for commuters.

Just something that has been keeping me busy and making my life a little easier that I wanted to share. Make no money from it just something fun. Would love any feedback and look forward to being a participator to this forum.

I made a quick video of how the home screen piece works: https://imgur.com/a/xZkosqx. You can access the site at https://departureboard.io

Very nice :)
One thing - speaking purely selfishly - that would be useful would be the ability to specify multiple options for arrival/departure. For example, commuting from Wigan (2 stations over the road from each other) to Manchester (3 major stations I can use) it would be handy to be able to get the different routes to all display together.

I appreciate that's likely to be a challenge!

Hard to see how this is better than traintimes.org.uk, which does have the multiple option feature suggested by Mathew S, and is not restricted to direct trains.

Not necessarily better. Just a project I made for fun. I find it simpler to use, traintimes.org.uk gives a wealth of information, this is designed for a very specific use case.

It scores over traintimes.org.uk in one key respect - it actually works. Traintimes.org.uk flatly refuses to function at all (as in I can't search for information at all because none of the fields/buttons work) on my phone.

Thanks for this. The simple ideas are usually the best. I've added it to my home screen for the daily commute. Won't replace RTT or other more detailed sites but it certainly "does what it says on the tin."

Nice!

The autocomplete turns 'OXF' into 'Foxfield' rather than 'Oxford' which I'd expect - it'd be good to prioritise the three-letter station codes.

Good effort - always impressed with people who can create this sort of thing. No idea how you do it! I certainly haven't got the skills to do this kind of work.

Assuming the OP is fairly young it is a good example of your work to include in future job applications or interviews.

Suggestion: could you make it so that you can order by your chosen column (eg order by arrival time)? Sometimes it's better to wait for a later train to get there sooner and if you could order by arrival time the best train to get would be much more apparent (if you were in a rush).

Well done. Website looks simple and clean.
I just wish I had the brains to be able to create a webpage. :D

I've promoted this app to my wife after she misread the paper timetable and waited an unnecessary half hour at Leeds the other day. Provides exactly the gen you need for a straightforward journey - nice job!

Good first effort! It would be good with station codes appearing at the top of the search - I had to type "Manchester " to get the stations. If I put in "MAN", I'm not that likely to want Ammanford...!

My personal favourite quick lookup app at the moment is Departures. Uses location services to find the nearest station if you are on the go.
