If holding a Manchester Stations -> Clitheroe Off-peak Day Return (Endorsed: Route valid only via Darwen) - cost = £11.90 (Adult: Standard class), how much extra should it cost to amend/excess the ticket to travel on the return portion (only) via Preston (Lancs)?

Is a Manchester Stations -> Clitheroe Off-peak Day ticket (Route: Any Permitted) actually valid via Preston (Lancs)?

The Any Permitted doesn't allow travel via Preston. You'd need the (more expensive) route: Preston ticket.

There are three fares for this journey.
Fares for CDR
Any Permitted £12.20 (only valid via Bolton & Blackburn direct
Via Preston 16.50
Via Darwen £11.90

The only mapped route is via Bolton & Blackburn (there are no mapped routes via Preston or Darwen) you therefore need to upgrade to the via Preston ticket which for one way will cost £2.30

Thanks Owlman for clearing that one up. Tried to purchase a one-way "Alt Route" excess at both Deansgate and Bolton booking offices last week and they both tried to charge £4.60. Also asked at Clitheroe, and they tried to make out that it wasn't possible to amend a route specific ticket in the first place (!)

Correct - sorry, I missed the route Preston ones and assumed it was a Permitted Route.

You can simply do it on the train - there is no penalty for getting a change of route excess onboard.

You'd also think that the booking office staff at Deansgate / Bolton / Clitheroe would know what they were doing and not either be trying to charge the wrong amount or claiming that it wasn't do-able !

Obtaining excesses is very hit and miss, you usually have to shop around to get them.

A change of route excess can be obtained on the train with no penalty.

The Via Darwen is intended for use on the direct route through Darwen.
The Any Permitted was introduced to allow travel on the then newly introduced Blackburn to Victoria, Todmorden Curve services. But yes looking at Journey Planner this is now showing not valid which must be an error as this is still the purpose that staff/customers on the ground would expect this ticket to be used for.
