Ill be seeing Man City away at Schalke in a few weeks, and as usual all we are told is that the match ticket is valid for use on local trains. As the game doesn't kick off til 2100, I'd like to make the most of it, how far does this ticket get me

Where does your plane land? Koeln, Weeze, Duesseldorf, Muenster or other town? From Gelsenkirchen Hbf to Veltins stadium it is 20 minutes with tramline 302.

From Schalke's website FAQs:
...am Spieltag im Bereich des Verkehrsverbundes Rhein-Ruhr (VRR) zur Anreise als Fahrkarte für den öffentlichen Nahverkehr.
"On the match day for travel on local services (to and from the game) in the VRR area.'

That means no IC/ICE/Thalys. No idea how strictly they would define "travel to the game." IIRC most of the Rhein-Ruhr site is in English.

BTW the Wuppertal Schwebebahn is shut. And Koeln is outside the area FYI. Maps on website.

VRR is a large area along the German/Dutch border from Borken - Kleve - Wegburg to Dormagen - Hagen and Unna as most eastern area and back to Borken. Düsseldorf and Gelsenkirchen is in this area.

Validity varies from club to club. For example, the ticket may only specify free travel in a window from, say, three hours before the game to three hours after. I've just looked at a ticket I have from a game at Schalke three or for years ago, and it does not specify a time window, simply saying that it's valid for travel to and from the stadium within the VRR area up until the close of operations for the day. As a previous post says, that's up for interpretation. For example, if you are staying in Gelsenkirchen and decide to get a train to Mönchengladbach at 9 in the morning, you'd be struggling to claim you were on the way to the match, whereas if you were travelling from Mönchengladbach to Gelsenkirchen at 12 you could quite well be on your way to the game. But perhaps they wouldn't be bothered. Or perhaps it would be valid anyway. The English leaflet explaining this isn't much help either (see page 30).
