But the 323s are going.
769s will also figure via Bolton, heading for Wigan.
You'd expect them to use electric (ie as 319s) Manchester-Bolton.

apparently northern are getting the 323s from the west midlands and replacing the 319s because they slow, but i'm not believing anything til i see one in new colours.

Some forum members (whose posts would indicate they are Northern employees) have posted recently on other threads that 319 training has ceased. Obviously nothing has been confirmed by ARN yet. However Class 323 in multiple can maximise platform space at some stations the Bolton line (especially Central/Crescent where 2*319 is too long but 2*323 is just passable). There is a thread for the topic here for any further discussion.

More station improvements at Bolton apparently:
https://www.networkrail.co.uk/feeds/bolton-station-gets-1m-facelift/

A £1m package of upgrades to Bolton station has been announced by Network Rail, Northern and TransPennine Express.

Between now and spring this year:
• new seating and signage will be fitted
• station toilets and waiting rooms will be revamped
• pigeon netting will be fitted to help keep the space clean
• And the under-used Victorian building on platforms four and five will be refurbished for potential retail, enterprise and community use.

Quotes from various people finsih the article.....

I'm running out of fingers, thumbs and toes for the number of 'improvements' to Bolton station over the years. Like toilets that don't flood any more. Or finally getting rid of the Red Star Parcels office.
Oh where is the red star office then?

Did they retain those iconic etched glass windows that took one back to the days of Lancashire Victorian railway travel?

Agreed. The most interesting part of the announcement is in the press notes:
With all major infrastructure work complete, one overnight final test train remains, which once complete in mid-February, will enable faster and more comfortable journeys, as well as new direct services across the North and beyond over the next year.

319s. No testing has been done 'on the quiet'. There is still a blanket ESR of 75mph for electric traction imposed on the whole route via Bolton and Chorley.

And it's not like it needs to be any higher at the moment; if, as you're insinuating, the planets do indeed align and electric services begin in the very near future, they'll be running to DMU timings - all of which are currently 75mph.

(185s don't use DMU speeds, nor have they regularly used the route since Chat Moss got wired; as such, I'm not expecting 397s to be making week-round appearances on the Bolton corridor until May at least)

Your forgetting that Northern use TPE 185's on the BIF - MIA service. However; the ESR is in relation to EMU's so no impact.

Yes, most likely. There are usually a few ECS positioning moves in the evenings after a strike day. For some reason one of them usually runs Blackpool to Newton Heath via Copy Pit.
