Having never been to Shrewsbury I didn't realise that so many TOCs call at this station.

Well there are only 3 (TfW, WMR and occasionally Virgin), but there are certainly a multiplicity of fare combinations!
The discounts continue with the LNWR variant of the Super Off Peak Return at £17.25 with railcard, from Euston.
This says it is specific to WMR/LNR/TFW so may be valid on TfW from Birmingham Int (not entirely sure about the Gold Card restrictions).

Thanks everyone. Seems like there are even more options than I thought! Its just a case of balancing the total cost, journey time and how early I might get to Shrewsbury and therefore have to hang around in the vicinity.
A £17.25 off peak return option sounds attractive as then I am not tied to a specific service.

You could get the 1010 or 1110 out of Marylebone which is booked to be hauled by a class 68 locomotive with comfortable coaches and gets to Birmingham at 1156 or 1256. On the return, there is class 68 trains from Birmingham at 1255, 1355 and 1555. They are an excellent ride and a much more pleasant journey than on a Virgin Voyager.
I've had a look on RTT and it says the 11:40 is 'Pathed as class 158'. I'd only want to go via Marylebone if the 11:40 uses a class 68 loco. I assume that it wouldn't be a class 158 as Chiltern don't use this class of rolling stock? Is there a simple way to confirm?

Also on mk3s is the business zone upgrade worthwhile? I have read that standard class on MK3s is very good making buisness zone not a worthwhile upgrade?

All of Chiltern's long-distance expresses are pathed as Class 158s. This simply indicates the acceleration and braking profile used for the profile - but I can confirm that Chiltern definitely don't have any Class 158s and in any case they would mightily struggle to run on time as they have a maximum speed of 90mph whereas the paths are based off 100mph running!

The 11:10 (not the 11:40) is definitely scheduled to be a Class 68 + MkIII coaches (see here), but as always there are no 100% guarantees. All I can say is that it is highly likely that it will use the scheduled stock, as the loco hauled services have to be scheduled with a Train Manager/Conductor throughout, whereas the ordinary services are Driver Only Operated between London and Banbury inclusive (and only gain a Train Manager/Conductor there, for services that go further north). So I would say it's very likely unless there is serious disruption.

Thanks, that all makes sense. I was asking about the 11:40 as it is a more convieniant service for my needs. It seems like that one won't be class 68 which is a shame.

I've been using Chiltern Railways regularly for journeys between Kent and the Midlands, including Shrewsbury, for a year or so now. The advance fares are very reasonable off peak and the journey times not that much greater. I switched when some Virgin Trains + Connectons advance fares doubled overnight. I was initially surprised how many passengers there are for the complete journey Marylebone - Birmingham but with their low fares and mainly nice modern trains I guess they've gained a fair chunk of the market.
