Now Ryanair are flying to Kiev from MAN I'm off for a week this August...would like to explore the city region using public transport, so any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Kiev is a great city to visit. I definitely recommend visiting it. There is certainly lots to do for railway enthusiasts. There are still plenty of interesting old trains from the USSR era in service.
