Isn’t there already a pool full of drivers ready for Chester?

I'm not sure it's all that full at the moment - there are 3 courses on the go right now with more expected throughout this year. The pool is certainly not empty, but it's not as full as it once was, and they'll need more candidates if the current rate of training continues.

It's worth pointing out the advert does also mention all the other depots across the North, not just Chester.

I’m still awaiting an assessment date, passed my F2F interview in Nov, they cancelled my assessment in December due to IT problems.. tried periodically to get in touch and chase them for a date.. still haven’t heard anything

Did anyone who had an interview before Christmas get feedback if they were unsuccessful? How strict is the six month rule for not being considered if you were already unsuccessful?

Very. I wouldn’t risk reapplying only to be rejected again and have to wait another 6 months.

Very true, albeit very, very vaguely:-
"As a trainee train driver based at Chester or surrounding depots".

Interestingly, the email alert says:

‘Thank you for registering for our Transport for Wales Rail Services vacancy notification service.

Just to let you know, we have just advertised a Trainee Train Driver vacancy in Chester (Chester, Shrewsbury, Crewe, Machynlleth, Pwllheli, Llandudno Junction), under the Trainee Train Driver category. Please visit www.comeaboard.co.uk to view this vacancy and all of the other vacancies we currently have available.’

So there is no mention of Holyhead, but on the recruitment site itself it is less specific and just says ‘Chester or surrounding depots’.

As it’s for a talent pool I assume they won’t know yet exactly what needs there are at which depots, but does anyone know if there is a reason they would leave Holyhead out? Or just an oversight?

Holyhead have had a few new drivers recently (qualified and trainees). Being a smallish depot, they could be at full strength.

I applied for Cardiff position which is now closed, should I apply for Chester separately? Or is it frowned upon?

No but I stated I will relocate near depot. I asked recruitment and they said to not worry as they will take it into consideration once applications will be processed. I'm in this lucky position that I'm highly mobile. Just wondering if I should apply for both depots separately as I do not want to be seen as serial applicant.

Usually they could close down one and they are funny with people saying they will relocate because it’s been known people haven’t actually located, not saying you’ll do this.

I’d drop HR an email and ask to be considered for both depots rather than a brand new application.

Thanks for advice :) As I said I'm in lucky position that I can move in moment notice without need of selling my house as I'm not tied with mortgage anymore.

When I applied I just went for the 1 depot, then during the phone interview I was asked if I’d consider anywhere else and ended up in contention for 3 other depots without any extra applications. (I ended up at the depot I originally applied for)

Hi all,
I am going to apply for both positions. I have two questions:
1. Is it frowned upon to apply for both?
2. What sort of criteria do they 'look for' in an application?

Thank you all.

I can’t answer the first one directly but if you get further they will want to know why you want to be a driver rather than conductor or vice versa and if you’ve applied for both you will need a convincing answer.

As for criteria, just go through the job description and give examples of things you currently do or have done that are similar, making sure you cover every point.

I'm in a similar position as I am in a talent pool for a conductors job with TfW, although the talent pool is to go to an interview / assessment rather than straight to the job as I applied a few month back and got shortlisted, but there wasn't enough room on the assessment day for me so was told I would be put in a talent pool and if a conductor position comes up again at Crewe then I would go straight to assessment without the need to reapply.

I don't want to jeopardise the conductor job but ultimately have my sight set on driving so shame to let the opportunity pass. That being said the conductor job is for Chester and surrounding areas, maybe Crewe being one of those so might speak to HR and see what the situation is and also drop in about applying for the driving position too?

I’m intrigued as to what criteria is looked upon favourably in the application - is it more what qualifications and relevant employment history you have or is it how impressive your personal statement is?
Can anyone shed some light on this, please?

On my course was an armed police officer that did the application with his work colleague. Their work history was almost identical but he said his personal statement was about 5 lines. The lad on the course said he filled the page with his personal statement. Only one of them got past the application stage. Take from that what you will.

Thank you for this. Just to clarify: The work colleague of the armed police officer was the one whose personal statement was only five lines?

Yeah, sorry, poorly written. My work colleagues work colleague who didn’t get the job did the 5 lines...... I’ve not made this any clearer have I! I have no idea how I got the job to be fair!!

Afternoon all. I passed the initial assessment for a conductor role in December and was told that I would be held in the talent pool. I assume that it's still not guaranteed that I would be put forward for the full assessment day for this role as newer candidates may usurp me? Here's hoping though.....

Ooh this is such a tough one.....I have applied for the trainee Drivers job and really want it...but think I probably stand more chance of getting a 'Service Quality Inspector' that has been posted as I speak Welsh....but don't know what to do as I don't want to jeopardise the Drivers application....any thoughts, please?

Trainee Driver at Chester. The SQI is Chester / Shrewsbury.
Sorry - I should have asked which depot do you want to work at as I know the vacancy is Chester and surrounding depots!
