Why are Aberdeenshire Council subsidising Stagecoach bus routes when the company makes such massive profits?

http://www.originalfm.com/nearly-30...ported-bus-services-to-be-stopped-or-reduced/

Because in reality it doesn't really make massive profits, further to that these services would make a massive loss if ran on a commercial basis.

However i do agree that routes like the X17, 67/68 should not be getting any funding at all as they're well loading regardless of time of day. Instead of axing the 204 they should have stopped all funding to the X17, 67/68.

The fact they still fund the 305 (which mirrors the half hourly 35) is appalling. I get that the whole point of the 305 is because the 35 doesn't serve Union Terrace (For Robert Gordons School), but surely it's more cost effective to just get Stagecoach to divert a few 35s per day.

The 777 being axed is no surprise, the route is so quite now it's been using a Ford Transit and the only real section of the route with any demand is no catered for by Stagecoach's new half hourly 747/757.

New vehicles for the 35... Although i do highly question the vehicle choice!

https://www.pressandjournal.co.uk/f...w-3-5-million-bus-fleet-for-north-east-routes

Leather seats, wi-fi and cleaner engines: New £3.5 million bus fleet for north-east routes

Stagecoach North Scotland will use the smart electric-hybrid double-deckers on their 35 service between Aberdeen, Banff and Elgin.

The environmentally friendly vehicles will be based at the company’s Macduff depot and come as part of a multi-million-pound investment by the firm.

It is hoped they will reduce CO2 and NOx emissions in the region when they get on the road in April.

Stagecoach said the additions to their bus fleet will offer passengers low floors for easy accessibility, leather seats, free wi-fi, USB charging points and contactless facilities.

Passengers will also be able to track the vehicles by using the company’s mobile phone app.

The buses have an onboard system called GreenRoad to provide drivers with instant feedback on their driving to improve and promote fuel-efficiency.

Stagecoach’s Macduff depot has previously won the Christopher Ball Memorial Award, which recognises efforts to drive economically.

The hybrid buses will replace the current fleet used on the route and will boost space for passengers by almost 50 per cent.

David Liston, managing director for Stagecoach North Scotland, said the firm was “thrilled” to be able to offer an improved service.

He said the changes will boost punctuality for passengers and as well as cutting down the environmental impact of east-coast travel.

Mr Liston said: “We are absolutely thrilled to be introducing even more new buses for the communities in Aberdeenshire and Moray.

“We know that service 35 is a vital service for the communities we connect and our new fleet will not only reduce the impact of the bus on the environment but they will also allow us to improve our punctuality for customers.

“We will look forward to welcoming everyone on board in April.”

Stagecoach’s Service 35 connects more than 15 towns in Aberdeenshire and Moray to both Elgin and Aberdeen.

The Macduff depot employs 50 drivers who operate a fleet of 27 buses on various routes between Elgin and Aberdeen.

Are double-decker vehicles really necessary for a rural route like the 35? I used to travel on the 36 and most of the time, I was the only one on the bus. That was just on Saturdays though, would the buses be busier during the week?

The 35 is a far more substantial route than the 36. While currently there is demand for deckers a better option would be to increase the frequency back to pre 2016 levels. Service buses are just not at all suitable for full length workings.

More cuts... this time mostly down to the council, although not entirely.... :frown:

Aberdeenshire Timetable Consultation

As a result of the reduction in Aberdeenshire Council’s supported bus services in Aberdeenshire, we are inviting customers to review our proposed timetables from Tuesday 12th February until 22nd February. All feedback received will be reviewed ahead of the final timetables being submitted for registration. The new timetables are to take effect from Monday 15th April 2019.

Interesting to see the 210 making a comeback of sorts although I really struggled to get my head around the timetable! I’m sure there was a 210 a few years ago that ran from westhill industrial estate to Banchory at peak times but was withdrawn. I’m not sure how this one will fare.

I always wish I’d done a full run of the original 210 when it went Aberdeen to Ballater but alas!

The new 210 just uses the Crathes Schools Optare Solo with the extra runs added to the start/end of the duty. The 119 uses the Abyone Schools bus which sits at Ballater doing nothing most of the day. Overall the changes see a PVR reduction in Deeside.

The 200 ran around 7 years ago from Aberdeen to Banchory. Here's the 200/210 timetable from April 2012. To be fair the new 210 is pretty much a cut down version of the 200.

Stagecoach invest in 15 brand new electric hybrid double deck buses

Stagecoach North Scotland today announced plans to introduce 15 brand new smart hybrid double deck buses to their fleet in the north-east of Scotland.

The buses mark a £3.5 million investment from Stagecoach North Scotland and will be based at the Macduff depot. The fleet of electric-hybrids will operate on service 35 between Aberdeen, Banff and Elgin. The brand new buses are low floor easy-access and are fully equipped with leather seats, seatbelts, free wi-fi, USB charging points and contactless payment facilities.

The new vehicles are also equipped with the most up to date vehicle tracking system which means passengers will be able to track exactly when their bus will arrive by looking up their bus stop in the 'bus stops nearby' section of the Stagecoach mobile app or by visiting stagecoachbus.com.

For the past 3 years the Stagecoach Macduff depot has been awarded the Christopher Ball Memorial Award for being the best depot in the UK for eco-driving. A system called GreenRoad is installed on all Stagecoach vehicles and uses a traffic-light LED system on the dashboard to give drivers instant feedback on their driving manoeuvres, encouraging smoother, safer, and more fuel-efficient driving.

The 15 brand new electric-hybrids will build on the achievement by the driving team in Macduff and will further reduce the CO2 and NOx emissions in the north east. The fleet will replace the existing coaches used on the route and will provide around 45% more capacity for those travelling on the service. A panoramic view of the Moray Coast will be on offer for those choosing to sit on the upper deck and the lower deck will not only improve the ease of boarding the bus for customers with mobility restrictions but will also reduce boarding times for wheelchair users.

Service 35 is a vital service to the north east connecting more than 15 towns in Aberdeenshire and Moray to both Elgin and Aberdeen. The service operates every 30 minutes between Aberdeen and Banff Monday – Saturday and hourly on Sundays. The service between Banff and Elgin operates every hour Monday – Saturday and every 2 hours on Sundays.

David Liston, Managing Director, Stagecoach North Scotland said: “We are absolutely thrilled to be introducing even more new buses for the communities in Aberdeenshire and Moray. We know that service 35 is a vital service for the communities we connect and our new fleet will not only reduce the impact of the bus on the environment but they will also allow us to improve our punctuality for customers. We will look forward to welcoming everyone on board in April.”

Stagecoach North Scotland has invested £15.5 million in 64 brand new buses in North Scotland in the last 4 years. The 64 buses includes 10 brand new coaches in November 2017 for service 10 Aberdeen – Inverness and 8 brand new low-floor buses for the Inverness airport service 11 in September 2018.

All 15 of the electric hybrid double deck buses are expected to be on the road by April 2019.

It's believed they'll be "Smart Hybrids" rather than Enviro400H's. While i've not looked in to them fully yet i believe they have an additional electric motor which assists the engine in moving the bus, as such you get better fuel economy, lower emissions and better acceleration.

If what i've just said above is utter rubbish, forgive me! I'm a bit sleep deprived right now, but i believe i'm right...

GreenRoad is simply one load of cowpat, drove around edinburgh without it for 8 months and not once did my driving falter, yet workin at stagey n First I was always warned I had a score to high.

GreenRoad is pretty dodgy 90% of the time to say the least, seen plenty of instances where you turn a corner at barely faster than walking speed and you get a warning!

Au contraire: "mair" is the Scots word for "more". That's what made me cringe. :)

Would have thought it was "mare"... But anyway! Yeah it is kind of cringe worthy...

I assume these will be in service in time for the service changes on the 19th of April.

It's suspected that some of the KX61 Panthers will move to Aberdeen to displace the remaining older style Panthers and Profiles, with the rest going to Highlands to displace former D&E stock. This should in theory allow the 201/202 to be almost fully Panther operated.

What will stay from the "new" D&E stock?

At a guess... E200s, Solo SRs, Centros, Streetlites & ALX400s. This leaves about 15 vehicles to replace (9 coaches).

The new E400s will replace the 16 Panthers at Macduff so.

The priority for replacement will be the B9Rs on the older Panther bodies. Of which there are 53606/8/10 at Aberdeen, 53607 at Stonehaven, 53609 at Buchan.
Next will probably be the B12Bs. Of which 53110 is at Insch, 53105/6/7/12 are at Elgin.
They'll probably retain these to displace D&E stock, so that's 10 of the 16 Panther2s reallocated, with 10 older Panthers moved to Highland to displace the 9 D&E coaches.
This would leave 7 Panther2s at Aberdeen (keep in mind 4 are already based here) which is enough to operate the Royal Deeside.
The final 6 Panther2s will probably replace the last 4 remaining SV08 B7Rs at Bluebird or go up to Caithness.

This is mostly just speculation... So take it with a pinch of salt!

Vehicles are the E40D "Smart Hybrids" which is just a standard E40D with a 48V electric motor, some supercapacitors and software to turn off unnecessary ancillaries.

Priority for replacement is B7Rs of all ages, though because of the number of vehicles on loan to cover the D&E work I wouldn't be surprised to see nothing binned for a good few months. How those B7Rs are freed up is open to speculation, and comes down to whether you believe North Scotland is still Highland & Bluebird, or now one entity.

I would agree, however I've been told by a good source that the priority for displacement will be the remaining B9R/Panthers (KX58 plates), specifically those at Aberdeen. There's only 8 B7Rs left service in at Bluebird, all are 2008/9 models (SV08/SV09/PX59).

Which comes back to my closing point, North Scotland is still not yet seen as a single entity.

Bluebird are talking about B9R replacement, but Highland are desperate for B7R and D&E replacement...

Highland bar Inverness area make no money. Im will be surprised if Wick and Skye are still part of Stagecoach in the years to come.

Actually they're split in to much smaller groups. In the eyes of management even Stonehaven and Peterhead are seen as totally different entities. The "Bluebird side" is more profitable so it's common logic that it gets more investment.

It all comes down to profit and reliability, hence why the priority is to replace the unreliable KX58 Panthers at Aberdeen as these operate on the Deeside 201/202 which have came under lots of criticism of late. The B7Rs while in quite poor cosmetic condition still prove cheap to run and fairly reliable (When compared to Panthers).

They've tried cutting the Caithness Local service before, but anytime they do they are faced with a strong media backlash. They have cut back quite a bit since 2009, however i'm surprised they haven't cut more.
