Northern Unit Refurbishments

I travelled on 158752 today. What era of refurbishment does this one have as it didn’t seem to be neither the old franchise’s standard nor anything I’d recognise as the current standard
It was the first 158 to go through phase 1 - refurb on a like for like basis and the new paint scheme. The seats are a plain blue fabric which was felt to be too plain. It has yet to get new seats or usb sockets fitted, which it will get towards the end of the refurb programme.

It was previously mentioned in this post that Northern's 323s will go for refurb in May/June 2019. I suppose time will tell.
All the 323s will eventually end up at Northern. I say eventually as it'll be a few more years before they are all in the North West - probably 2022 before that happens given WMTs Aventra order is behind schedule.

The Class 319s are older so Porterbrook prefer that Northern take the newer 323s before the franchise ends in 2025. The remaining 40 or so 319s can be used for any further 769 orders and for spares which will become a more pressing issue given the age of the fleet.

The 323s better suit Northern as they can be operated as 6 carriage services whereas this cannot be done with the 319s. Not to mention superior acceleration, the 319s are pretty poor at keeping to a timetable on commuter services.

At least it still has comfortable seats even if they are a bit plain. Let's hope they never get round to fitting new ones

Are there any plans to reuse the Richmond seating from the 144s in another class?

It seems daft to me to either keep BR originals in 150s or fit ironing boards in 150/158s when this better newer type of seat is available?

A skip, hopefully. They aren't good seats - the bases are too thick and poorly attached and collapse too quickly, at which point they're awful (though I suppose a new base could be designed that doesn't). The good seat of that generation is the Chapman.

Meanwhile re 150s while I dislike 3+2 it'd be hard to justify removing it until there has been enough capacity increase not to need it. Re 158s the seat frames don't need replacing, you can just use the originals with new cushions, the recent GWR refurbs have done a very good job with this, making a 20-odd year old unit look and feel brand new.

As a regular 144 pax I wholeheartedly agree.

They’re now so saggy it’s like sitting on Bagpuss.
A stripy, purple Bagpuss.

I hear a shiny painred 333 013 is parked outside Holbeck depot so must be nearing completion.
Any news on newly refurbished 333 001 which was reported on here as being used by Siemens as a source of spares (surely not).

009 was a Christmas tree for years, but the posts about 001 seemed to suggest that it was raided for spares AFTER coming back from Holbeck. Sounds unlikely but then this is Northern...

I think you mean Siemens. Nothing to do with Northern...

Whoever is responsible, the refurbishment programme as a whole seems rather shambolic. Having to rob parts from a newly refurbished unit suggests that there's a problem somewhere with the supply of parts. Northern, as the end user, should be asking serious questions of their contractor Siemens- and the maintenance agreement the two parties presumably have ought to prevent such situations.

This christmas tree stuff is just a rumor so for now, we should take it with a pinch of salt.

From what I’ve been told by 333001 - somebody from northern went and signed it off as complete. It wasn’t, and subsequently Siemens refused to touch it.

How true that is I don’t know, that’s just what I’ve heard about it.

Ooooh, nice! :D

Hmmm, I wonder what diagram it will end up on this afternoon? I wouldn't mind a ride in that. Interesting to note that they've used the same seats & just re-covered, and that doesn't look like the flat cloth used elsewhere? I did have to laugh at the person moaning about the seats early on in that Tweet though, its the same train just given a bit of spit 'n' polish!

It does look like moquette, doesn't it? A welcome change if so.
