Also, for the record, any train/unit etc that has a white livery.......nightmare to keep clean, gets tatty very quickly, what were they thinking when they proposed white as a valid colour scheme???

I think I read it on this forum that one of the reasons for white liveries was that it made it easier to apply vinyl liveries.

Class 306 as it was my first commuter train, 309 s in original state they had a pretty front end......

Ken has nailed it. Both classes were excellent at what they were designed for, even if the 306 windows rattled at lot. So those will always be my favourites. In the loco world, class 47s easily, which should upset a few. And dc land, REPs, CIGs and CEPs were all good fun with a keen driver.

Today there's nothing to get too passionate about, if that's the right word. Will miss the GA Mk3s and the East Coast Mk4s when they go though, posh class at least.

The future is rather bland. The GA replacements had better be rather good as that's what I'll spend the rest of my life travelling on - sobering thought. :|

Class 365s. They've been part of my regular travel for the last 20 years. Even today I still have a little smile to myself when a 365 turns up rather than a 700 or 387.

Decent interior layout, fit for outer suburban work
Distinctive whining sound from the motors
Nothing these days like a 100mph run on the down fast with the windows open on a hot summer evening

And they've got a smiley face on the front :D

Past...
Class 50s doing 100mph between Reading and Paddington
I particularly enjoyed loco hauled trains with most classes tbh up to and including 67s and 68s.
On DMU's,I was a big fan of the C3s in Cardiff (Class 116s)
Most Swindon built sets and Thumpers
and latterly Pacers.

Present...
Only just lol,I like all the PEP units
Classes 313 especially,and 314,315,507,508s.
Massive fan of all London Underground.
66s on heavy freight.

Newer...I like the 395s which win over Pendo's any day. Pity they don't have a buffet car though!

Future.. looking forward to TPE new trains.

Hates...
Voyagers 153s,155s,

Favourite operator...TFW.as it has a decent mix.and the best looking 158s out there lol.

Least favourite operator...VTWC.
390s don't do it for me tbh.
Like Voyagers,Toy trains.

Proper Valenta engined HST, class 26s and 47/7s, essentially anything that was around Edinburgh pre-electrification.

What would everyone's favourite class of train be past present and near future

Mines would be
Past class 101 always remember going on them when I was a young boy going to Edinburgh from Kirkcaldy.

Present class 390 even think there the sexiest train ever built for British railways.

Near future class 385 been on one and think there pretty good and quick

I may be 26 but I know that 1950's / 1960's Class 10x and 11x sKY's had seating at the very front where you could watch the driver change the gears - it would also mean you've not got too many standing passengers over you! I can imagine how too enjoyable travelling over the Forth Bridge (which I've yet to do) would've been like on a 10x or 11x!

The class 222 for me!

I know probably not many people are a fan of the 22x design, but I think their exterior looks great and the interior for me has always had a nice ambience. Their performance is also impressive.

In terms of future stock the class 397 and the TPE Mk 5s look promising.

I'm not a big fan of the 22x family myself. However, my favourite Voyager journey has to have been the return 14:10 from London Euston to Milton Keynes Central (MKC) on Tuesday 13th January 2015! I opted for a Pendolino coming down which I got and a Super Voyager on the 14:10. Due to emergency engineering works in the Watford area, the 14:10 left 55 minutes late and got to MKC 67 minutes late at 15:47.

The 14:10 was the front 5 coaches and instead of I think the Chester train it was the Crewe train - the 15:10 was the rear 5 coaches.

When I saw the Super Voyager, I thought it was nice to see a train I'm familiar with. Given the delay I was allowed on in First Class and could walk through to Standard.

As soon as I sat down I thought how luxury it was (it was the coach next to Standard Class).

Plus at one point I thought it was just me on the train - nope, me and 2 others. That has to be the quietest loaded train I've ever been on !

Old - Class 110 with the massive declassified 1st class seat, watching out the front window
- Peaks on Cross Pennine
- the huge noise of 47901
New - I like the look of all the new TPE stock
- Not everyone's favourite but I really like Electrostars….Derby should probably have stuck with them instead of the Aventra!

Sorry about that - I meant DMU's. Blinking predictive thing on my kindle!

Past: Underground A stock, Eurostar 373s (original interior)

Present: 4 abreast 350s and 444s for EMUs, 168s, 175s and 222s for DMUs. The 95 and S7 Underground stock. And HSTs

Future: The 397s hopefully

I also have a soft spot for the refurbished 411 4-Cep stock in Jaffa Cake livery! One train a day (I think) used to run from Charing Cross to the North Kent coast via Dartford which was operated by this stock, I tried to catch this train where possible.

Diesel Locos:
Class 37s all the way for me, followed by 47s and 33s
Modern diesel has to be the 68. Done a few journeys out of Marylebone and have been impressed by the racket :)
Electric Locos:
81s, 85s or 86s on Northampton Cobblers in the late 80s (especially the Saturday 6-coach runs, first stop Leighton Buzzard - many clocked going a bit faster than they should have been)
DMUs:
Never really had a favourite 1st Gen one, but I have soft spots for a few 2nd gen ones like 156s, 158s even though they replaced the loco hauled services in Scotland, and even 153s, but mainly because my kids think they're fun to ride on, especially on the Felixstowe branch.
EMUs:
Well most 1st Gen G.E. variants 302/5/7/8 as that's what I first commuted to London on, as well as 310s on WCML and 312s. Memories of seeing 306s too but they'd gone by the time I started work. Probably the favourite has to be the 309s.
Modern ones, well soft spot for the 321s but I don't find them comfortable personally (seats are too low for me, although the Renatus ones are much better if a little hard). I like the 350s and 360s though.
Coaches:
Well Mk3s all the way personally, but always enjoyed the older Mk2/2a interiors and any old Mk1s.

As I think about it, some of the trains themselves aren't that great but it's the memories of travelling and the places visited which often attaches me to the trains, especially 156s and 158s (Scottish trips mainly).

I know what you mean! They may not be "proper" trains, but they can almost make better memories in a way :)

Past - Almost anything with a boiler, firebox, chimney & wheels.
Not quite so long ago - Almost any diesel loco hauling a passenger train.
Present - Class 175, despite their "problems"
Near Future - ?????, but probably Class 68 on passenger trains.

I took my first ride on one today and if they didn't have their chronic problems, they would be the best DMU's on the network. Their seat alignment is perfect and each seat has good legroom. It would be a shame to send them to a breakers yard when TfW don't need them.

apparently some of the seats are like sofas and others are hard. Sounds like some of them need refoaming

Deltics on Mark IId stock from Leeds to Kings X
Class 47s; 40s; 45s; 37s; 31s; 25s in that order.
Honourable mention for the 33s when they were on the Marches Line. I used to watch them go by from my classroom window in Ludlow. (I was the bored teacher!)

Current: 175s when you can get a seat.

Best loco hauled - HST (looking forward to 68 and Mk5 obviously ;)

Best multiple unit - Class 222 by far (acceleration is amazing on those things!) The interiors have seemed to age relatively well and the seats are very comfortable.

I very rarely travel on electric trains unfortunately, the Pandelinos are quite nice though!

what is it...? :)
I'm guessing they were talking about the OeBB Railjet. (I'm actually not a fan of the Railjet because of the seating inside.)

Seeing as non-UK trains are allowed, I'll go for SBB Panoramic carriages. They can get a bit sunny inside, but they're comfortable and give you a really good view. Or if a more "regular" train is required, the SBB EW IV carriages: they're also quite comfortable, and 4x4 seating in 2nd class means you get decent window-views all-round (whereas most other countries seem to insist on airplane seating, which really limits the views). Of course, with an Re460 as haulage: they're quite smooth - as opposed the old Re420 which seems to be rather jerky.
