Pardon?

...sorry.

You go into a ‘soundproof’ cupboard and put on a pair of headphones. You’re played a series of descending and ascending tones at irregular intervals in each ear individually and you click a button (like weather presenters used to use) each time you hear a tone. If you’re lucky then no one will be moving furniture on the floor directly above or using a chainsaw just outside.

LOL yes ! or trains passing outside the van !

You attend a NWR compound, climb into a converted transit van, then enter a “sound proof” box and put on some huge ear phones.

Or as I did, turn up at an a third party doing the medical. In the pouring rain, no umbrella only for them to open up 20 mins late. Was there before the receptionist. Then sit in the reception for 40mins with the receptionists child as the person conducting it was even later.

That was a fun morning for me!

Makes you laugh doesn’t it, if we rocked up late or made a total mess of the appointment do reckon we’d get the job lol

One of my railway medical hearing tests I thought I must have gone totally deaf as I couldn’t hear any of the tones, only for it to turn out the headphones weren’t plugged in!

Sectional Appendix will have mileage information in, I would just chill and enjoy school mate - all the information you need will be given to you when you land at your SB.

They won’t expect an external candidate to know that kind of information, you’d be better brushing up on CP6 Wessex route investment projects, and network rail in general with a bullet points on the actual SB, nothing to in-depth like mileage covered though.

What train and freight operating companies operate on it. Where actually is the box. What type of box it is. What type of line is it, electrified or diesels etc

It doesn't need to be massively detailed nor specialised .

Afternoon, don't suppose anyone knows of any signaller jobs in the North West that are likely to go external are they?

Not seen any for weeks, presume they have to be listed internally first and then go external if not enough applicants.

Thanks guys and gals

Llandudno Junction is on the internal at the moment, though I doubt it’ll go external unfortunately.

Manchester ROC has hovered up quite a few SB of late so external jobs are like hens teeth.

Cheers Tom

Is that the only one on the internal at the moment in the NW?

Realise that will be very few now due to the ROC but still keep checking daily

I did look last night, that was the only one that I recall to be honest - your doing the right thing though, literally check daily !

Would a Station position at lime street or Piccadilly be something you’d consider to get inside NWR, then access to the internal list ?

First strike for me.
Met online test benchmark, went on to be considered for interview, but had email today telling me they've found a more suitable candidate.
Is it best to ring or email for feedback?

Did you have an interview or not get offered one?

If did have an interview definitely worth emailing and requesting feedback especially if you have other applications or plan to apply again.

Sure you will read on here it can take many attempts to finally succeed so don't be too disheartened and keep trying

No interview, I was under consideration for one, so I guess they were happy with
CV
Application with 69 pre screening questions and
Online assessments

Didn't get opportunity of interview though, email stated they'd found a more suitable candidate.

I'm happy to have got this far in my first ever NR application, so I'll carry on trying.

Just thought it'd be handy to have feedback on my application though.

No harm asking for feedback but my understanding is that they sift the applications and the top 5 scores on the online tests get forwarded to the recruiting manager for interview

Which job was it by the way?

As you say keep trying, your online test results remains valid for 6 months and did you by any chance keep a copy of the pre screening questions and answers, as others have said should keep a copy of these which you can copy/paste for any future application.

Thanks
I'd read about the sift for top 5 scores.
It was grade 2 at Heckington, Lincolnshire

Yes I've kept a copy of the prescreen q & a's, should've copied and pasted them into a word doc for next time. I'll type them into word shortly ready for next application.

Not sure if it's much use to you, but I have an application in for a grade 3 role, but I saw the LOM last week who told me that the position had already been filled. My application has still progressed to 'Application under consideration!'

You can copy and paste it back out of an application if you log in. I can't quite remember how as it's been over 6 months since I applied but it'll save you typing it all up again .

Thanks for the heads up.
I guess that kind of thing happens sometimes, maybe insurance if the candidate pulls out or needs to be advertised to keep in line with company policy.

Thanks for the reminder that's another idea I had to save time.

Sent an email to NR last night asking for feedback.
Got a reply at 08:14 this morning, very impressed!
Amongst other things, I was given this feedback,

"For future applications, please ensure you tailor your CV to provide evidence of where your skills and experience match the required criteria"

Good that they replied and gave some feedback.

Obviously you will note what they say but in my opinion that is NOT what a CV is for, a CV summarises your personal details, education and previous employment and is not a platform to give evidence of skills and experience for one particular role. If any employee wants this information, which most do now of course, then the opportunity to evidence this should be either at interview or pre-interview screening. We all know NR have a 70 question pre-screening process and it is this that you use to give evidence of skills and experience.

Maybe i am wrong, interesting to see anyone with a HR background has an opinion on this?

Every job you apply for, assuming they are not exactly the same role, should have a slightly different CV. It shouldn't be one size fits all.
Maybe they mean where you enter your previous employment on your CV, you could marry that to the skills needed for this job.
For example, if you're ex forces, and applying for a security guard job, you could say that you have experience of patrolling in war zones where you needed to be on high alert constantly and monitoring your surroundings.
But if applying for a signaller role, you may say that you have experience of working in high pressure situations, where multitasking, quick thinking and considering others/ surroundings are paramount.
Without actually seeing the CV, it would be hard to know exactly what they mean.
Does that make sense?
