I enjoy watching Michael Portillo's Great British Railway Journeys every year. So far, they've broadcast one series every year from 2010 onwards, always in January.

The Facebook page about this tv series has just announced that starting in January there's going to be a new series of Great American Railroad Journeys.

So, does that mean that there's going to be no new series of Great British Railway Journeys?

Does anybody have any further information about this?

Has anybody seen Michael out and about on Britain's railways filming this year?

Met Michael Portillo when he made his last series. I think he should do one on the 'generation game line' That is between Shipley and Bradford. I call it the 'generation game line' for good reason. What you do is look out of the window, look at all the rubbish lineside, and when you get off, you get to keep everything you have recalled. I'm sure everyone must have a use for a dozen old tyres, a wheelchair, a couple of old mattresses, a kitchen sink, and of course, a cuddly toy.

He is possibly spreading his talents, having recently shown the "Hidden History of Britain" series, which I highly recommend, along with the accompanying book. Along with his weekly appearances on "This Week" he might be busy enough without making more railway programmes. If you attend any of his live shows, he explains the substantial amount of time it takes to make a 30 minute programme.

Have you seen him do a talk? If so, how much of it is about his railway travels? (I imagine a lot of it would be about his political career).

The one he did in Manchester was 50/50
I want to go and see him deliver one of his talks. Honestly, is he a good speaker? Also, if I'm only really interested in seeing him talk about his travels/railways, would I likely find his political talking boring?

He is a good speaker and there is a lot of humour, but I wonder who writes that part of it. Whether you find it boring comes down to personal interest, but he was around when the UK changed dramatically, and whatever your opinion it is interesting to hear from someone who was on the "inside" of a very controversial government. The railways have been, and probably will always be a political football, so the two halves of his show are linked. If more people didn't find politics boring, we might not be where we are right now. I would recommend going to see him perform.

While I'm a bit sad, I'm also a bit glad.
Downloaded them from the iPlayer every year but I think it's time to move on to other things. Shame they're doing more abroad versions too. I prefer the three/four programme stint like the one the BBC did about India's railways. Shame this couldn't be merged so he visits a different country every week and does a mini-series about the railways.

The cutting at Goldthorpe is pretty bad for that.

Next Monday (25th February) , a new series of Great Indian Railway Journeys is on in the same time slot as the British series currently airing.
