A pop-up window is appearing on the Virgin Trains website when checking for Easter weekend dates, announcing that Euston will be closed on the 19th, 20th, 21st and 22nd April 2019.

It offers to email users with more detail when available.

I have attached a screen shot of the pop-up below, and as I couldn't find any other threads mentioning it, nor indeed anything else online at all, I thought that I would mention it here in case it's new news and it might inform anyone who is planning Easter travel.

The Virgin website's planned rail improvement works calendar says

"During this four-day closure, services on the two Bank Holidays (Friday 19 and Monday 22 April) will start from / terminating at Harrow & Wealdstone, connecting into / out of Transport for London’s Bakerloo Line. On Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 April, services will start from / terminating at Milton Keynes Central. On the Saturday and Sunday, passengers will be advised to transfer onto services to / from London Marylebone and London Kings Cross. Revised timetables and more details will be published nearer the time."

HS2 works and other bits and bobs further north which is why they cannot get to Harrow on the Saturday and Sunday.

What are the other bits and bobs further north?

Closure of Oxenholme to Windermere has just been on local ITV Border news and HS2 London Euston works were being blamed for buses replacing trains between Oxenholme and Windermere. Also stated the line is being closed not for works on the line but for "access" whatever that means. Network Rail person on tv just said a very generic statement about works being complex etc and no actual details.

WCML closed north of Lancaster Sat/Sun (local trains to Barrow). Also Weaver Jn-Wigan, and Rugby-Birmingham International.
VT are diverting from Crewe to Preston via Manchester and Bolton (for the first time on electric).
Not a great weekend for a trip on any part of the WCML.
Sleepers running via ECML to King's Cross (Tuesday morning via NLL into Euston).

Starting and terminating at Harrow & Wealdstone sounds interesting... hope it’s thought through better than the Finsbury Park fiasco on ECML a few years back at Christmas.

Will there be any other closures of Euston during this year's bank holidays or will it just be at Easter.
Are you sure Virgin Trains will run to Harrow & Wealdstone because in the past they have reversed at Milton Keynes and only the London Northwestern has rundown there.

Virgin have 3tph (Manchester, Liverpool, Preston).
No through trains to Birmingham (VT or LM).

Do you know what went wrong there and what was done about it?

From what I recall, to many Inter city services starting and terminating at Finsbury Pk, along with all the GN (well FCC then) terminating.
If I remember this was all to do with KGx under possession but it was not handed back from Network Rail on time.

It was discussed significantly at the time on here. I also believe that the 'plan' for using FPK for terminating trains when KGX isn't available wasn't correctly implemented on the ground.

TOC staff at FPK decided they knew better and started not to follow the plan. The plan worked earlier and also about 6+ hours later when things were recovered.

Oh I didn’t mean to kick off the Finsbury saga again. I just wanted to make the point that I hope lessons have been learnt since then and it won’t get out of hand.

The paths are in RTT for VT, as mentioned by LNW-GWJoint
1x Preston
1x Manchester
1x Liverpool
Departures from Harrow & W on Fri 19th April
http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/search/basic/MKC/2019/04/19/1424

The only services planned to start and terminate at MKC are North Wales Services and they aren’t running hourly either.
No West Mids services due to engineering works north of Rugby. Buses Rugby to Birmingham Int

Will there be any other closures of Euston that will lead to Virgin Trains terminating at Harrow & Wealdstone?

Presumably even with normal working north of Rugby it would be better to direct West Midlands passengers to Marylebone. Are Chiltern running any extras?

What work is being done north of Lancaster? And how far north does the closure run?
Lots of work north of Crewe. Track renewal at Golborne, tamping at Wigan, bridge renewal, reballast at Milnthorpe, tamping at Carnforth, high output ballast cleaning at Shap, track renewal Gretna to Carstairs etc etc...

Add that into the Euston closure and the WCML is effectively shut for the entire Easter weekend.

Thanks.
Shame the Network Rail person on ITV Border News could not give these examples.
Is this information in the public domain somewhere or just internally within NR and TOCs?

Normally it is in section 7 of the engineering access statement which can be downloaded, but if work has been added since that was published then it doesn't sit in the public domain.

What's it called? It's called Cumbernauld
You can get to Birmingham ( and thence to other places north) from Marylebone. Surprised no-one has mentioned it.

How would you get from Rickmansworth or Watford Junction to Lanark on that weekend (a friend of mine and their daughter does that journey frequently, but mainly drives as they have luggage, and would have 2 ridiculous double backs as the Motherwell and Watford Junction calls were cut at the December 2008 timetable change) with no double backs?

Not everybody would be travelling to and from London that weekend, and it does seem that intermediate journeys have not been thought through at all from what I have seen so far.

Intermediate journeys will still be lower than travel to/from London though, and you are not going to please everyone. Last block there were complaints on why trains couldn't get closer to London, this is a better situation than previously.

Certainly to Edinburgh. I am going there for Easter. I could have gone via Newcastle but as I want a quick journey up on Good Friday I am prepared for a slow journey home on Easter Sunday.

Might these works (and the May BH closures) also involve the completion of the ATF feeders on the southern end of the WCML? I've noticed insulators without any wires attached along the route from about Wembley (IIRC that's the southern end) to Cheddington. Certainly none through Apsley.
